If I'm not mistaken, RB3D requires a graphics accelerator card that uses GLIDE technology (?) to get the most out of the software. The reason I ask is that my wife bought a new computer and also bought an accelerator card (in the $300 range) but I noticed that it didn't mention anything about Glide. The RB3D picture that now is displayed on the monitor is not as good as the one on my older computer, that uses a much older accelerator card and an older processor (but did use GLIDE technology). The 3D effect seems to be lost.

My question is, do modern graphics cards support GLIDE, do they mention GLIDE on their boxes, or is GLIDE passe in the new cards.

I believe GLIDE technology is history. If you check this section of the forum you will find RB3D topics refering to running the game on new computers. Those lucky enough, or technically competent enough to run RB3D on an XP powered machine do so without having GLIDE enabled. They have decided to accept the loss of 3D. This is unfortunate, as it is a great game and will likely be the reason for old computers and graphics cards hanging around when they are way past their prime. I know I am lothe to get rid of my trusty 266 MHz computer for this reason.

GLIDE was the 3D technology of choice when RB3D came out a number of years ago (1997!) as the most popular card of the time (Voodoo) supported it. However, GLIDE technology has been surpassed by the more recent 3D cards (GeForce etc), so RB will only run in Direct Draw mode if you have a new graphics card, because GLIDE isn't supported by them. Someone is working on a GLIDE wrapper for RB, which will enable the latest generation of cards to 'read' the earlier GLIDE software, but it's far from perfect yet. I tried it on my system and the game played fine except for the invisible aircraft and terrain! One was produced for the game Grand Prix Legends, which works fine. Alas, I'm afraid you're stuck with Direct Draw until the wrapper is perfected.

All is not lost, though. Keep checking out the forum at http://forums.delphiforums.com/swwisa/start for the latest developments.

One way of getting around this problem is to get hold of a old Voodoo 2 card. They work with your main 3d card and slots into a vacant PCI bus. If you can get your hands on two and use them in SLI mode your 3d performance may be on par with a Vodoo 3 card.

I am not to shure if Windows XP supports Voodoo2 though and there may be some of the more modern 3D cards that will not work with a Voodoo 2

Voodoo cards for RB3D may be a thing of the past. *Seems one person at least is working on a Glide wrapper for RB3D and it's looking very good. *You can download it from here:

Has anybody tried this new glide wrapper yet? I'd be interested to hear what you think of it since I am on the verge of putting a crowbar in my wallet and getting a new pc and it won't come with a voodoo card at this point in technology.

I think you'll find some answers to your question at the SimHQ RB2 board:

Good news, folks. Visit www.glidos.net and go to the Red Baron page. I've managed to get my PC to run RB in Glide mode with a 1024x768 resolution - WooHoo!!!!! Much better than Direct Draw.

Note that, although the Glidos product is not free, the RB stuff is and therefore I highly recommend the download! It's very easy to install - just drop two files into your RB folder and you're away. Even though it's free, I'm willing to fire off the money to the developer - he's re-kindled my interest in RB.
