I'm having a problem with RB3D I'm hoping someone can help me with. I own RBII and downloaded and installed the 3D super patch. I play using Windows XP.
Here's the problem: Upon initial installation and for the first week or so of playing, the game works fine. After repeated times playing the game it starts to abort the game when I click on things. As an example, I'm trying to fly a mission with a pilot I have with about 10 missions, but every time I get to the start of the mission where I hit the "Tab" key to start the engine, the program shuts down. It doesn't lock up or anything, the program just quits and I'm back at my normal windows desktop. I tried reinstalling the game, but after a couple more weeks the problem just crops up again. Anybody have any ideas? It's really got me wondering. Thanks.

Red Baron 3D has more holes in it than a fish net. *I have had it quit the same way on me in the middle of a mission. *Sometimes it quits when ever I access a pilot record (in which case I delete the pilot and start over).
I bought the upgrade package and did not use the patch, so I do not know if this is true in your case, but when we tried to install it on my cousin's system, using XP for its operating system, we had similar problems. *When we installed it under Windows 98, the problem went away. *My cousin says that XP is not an effective game platform, which may or not be true.
The only reason that I put up with the damned game is that there is nothing yet out there better than RB3D, IMHO.
Good luck.

I have also declined to upgrade to both 2000 and ME (are they the same packages? I dunno). I am staying with Windows 98 until it crashes and burns.

There is a way in XP to get it to run the program as Windows 95 or 98 would. You go to My Computer, right click on the program, click Properties, click the Compatibility tab, and then put a check mark in the box next to the "run this program in compatibility mode for:", then choose Windows 95, 98 or whatever. If I do that will it cure my problems? Has anybody tried that? Maybe I'll give it a whirl.

Give it a try. But for what it's worth, XP and 9x are two very different Operating Systems.
I learned that in my A+ classes.
By the way, I take my final test for A+ Friday.

The best of British luck on your exams, Brother Al.
As far as I am concerned, you can keep XP.

Al, how difficult are the A+ classes? Been thinking of doing that myself, just to learn.

Where I went is not too bad. It's a "progress at your own pace" type of class.
But I was talking to one of the "student-instructors" and got a real eye-opener concerning the A+ exams.
The hardware part is pretty straight forward. (I can vouch for that, I've already taken and passed it) but the OS exam is a real ball-buster. The vast opinion seems to be that they are trying to find out what you DON'T know, more than testing you on what you do know.
According to one source, there is at least one question that is of questionable ethical conduct, based on what is known to be the correct answer.
Problem is, as I understand it, if you challenge one of their questions, you will be blocked from taking any further CompTIA exams for a full year.
Me, I'm gonna wait until I get my certificate THEN, I'll think about complaining.
VBR,
Al Lowe

Not to change the subject or anything, but I ran RB3D in Win 98 "emulation mode" and the only thing it did was mess up the controls. It didn't seem to have the problem I was having using XP, but then my problem isn't repeatable anyway so I'm not sure if it fixed anything or not. I think if I want to try running it that way and fix the controls issue I may need to install it that way from the get go. Trouble is, I'd hate to lose the records of some of my better pilots. Does anyone know which files those are so that if I wanted to reinstall the game I could save them somewhere and replace them once I've reloaded the game?
