All,
I am purchasing a new computer and my operating system (for better or worse) will be Windows XP.
Does anyone know whether RB3D will work on this operating system???
It appears that the majority here seem to prefer RB3D, so I'll try to get a copy for my new computer.

I hate to say this, but I doubt if RB3D will work in Windows XP. As I understand it, XP is based on NT, and it don't work in NT, or 2000.

Good Luck,

Wait a moment.....RB3D is running on XP.
My configuration:

AMD 1700XP (overclocked)
EPOX KH7A+
GeForce 2MX (overclocked heavily) driver: Detonator 27.42
256MB DDR RAM - Micron
Win XP prof.
Riva Tuner (for GeForce tweaking)

Red Baron 3D
Campaign Manager 1.1a
Canvas Falcons patch
Rabu's 2D terrain for Direct3D
Promised Land 16bit soundpack

No problems occured til now. Ofcourse I'am missing the Glide graphics, but not a problem anymore cos my second PC is running til 3 days with Win98SE and a Voodoo3 2000 (Duron700@850).

That is interesting. *RB3D on an XP system. *Maybe there's hope for Windows yet!!!

But, just in case, I think I'll stick with 98SE.

A friend of mine has RB3D running on XP fine except that there is no sound when you play or are in the menu's. So if you dont wanna play with sound your fine.

For the RB3D sounds in WinXP contest, i've readed in one of the topic of this board, that you can fix it by erasing of some files...
Now i don't remember which files : but check for them in one of the old topics. 8)

Hi all
I've just found the old topic about the sounds with WinXP :

When RB3d is first installed on a Windows XP system everything works perfectly. However, when you bring the game up a second time you don't get any sound and the preferences you set may not be working. This is directly related to two preference files that RB3D writes to your hard drive at the end of each session....rbprefs.dat and mpprefs.dat. Windows XP seems to be unable to read these files.
The only way to resolve this problem is to delete the rbprefs.dat (for single player) and/or the mpprefs.dat (for multiplayer) EACH TIME BEFORE YOU START A GAME. The rbprefs.dat file is in C :SierraRedBaron3DData and the mpprefs.cat file is one level deeper in C : SierraRedBaron3DDataMulti (assuming that you accepted the default install path when you set up the game).
You will now have sound but you will need to reset your game preferences each time. Another suggested fix that I haven't personally tried is to create an empty folder called rbprefs.dat and another called mpprefs.dat (in the multi folder). I've heard that this prevents RB3D from overwriting the .dat fil

Strange, I installed RB3D 3 times on a XP system but never had any problems with the sound.

VictorVonDoom:
Your solution for the sound problem works fine. *I created the rbprefs.dat folder which is empty and the game now starts every time with sound. *Yes, all preferences are set to default as on the first startup. *
It's nice to have a computer with enough RAM so that the game isn't jerky anymore!

There's a new solution for the XP/no sound problem:
unplug your USB stick before starting the game. Plug it back in after the music starts.
(Seems this problem only occurs with XP and USB joysticks.)
The benefit of this new solution is that you can save your own preferences in stead of the default ones.
