Dawn Patrol Mini-Con in MN

Celebrating the 90th Anniversary of Armistice Day
–and-
The 31st Annual MN Armistice Weekend Dawn Patrol Event

2PM-Evening Friday November 7th 2008
All Day Saturday November 8th 2008
Sunday 10AM-Afternoon November 9th 2008
WHERE: Monster Den Games 1815 East 41st St Minneapolis, MN 55407

What is this game??

It was originally released in the mid 70’s and re-released in the 80’s as an RPG WW1 dog fighting board game. Dawn Patrol still has a worldwide following and a strong Midwest contingent of players. The game designer is currently working on a re-release that we will be play testing over the weekend. The game has also been converted to play with table top miniatures, which we will also be showcasing over the weekend. Each game consists of 4+ players, and usually takes around an hour to play. Pilots that survive earn mission/kill credit that can be applied to future missions for advantages.

All walk-up interested players will be welcome to join in the fun!

Please visit dawnpatrol.org - Home for more information on the game and/or to sign up for the event!

I bought my first copy of Fight in the Skies (Dawn Patrol's original name) when it was published by Guidon Games.

And it was JUST published by Guidon Games. I bought it in its first year of publication.

Kinda dates me, yes?

We had a great weekend of gaming, with 14 players attending from as far away as Seattle, WA!
Some of the highlights-

There was a mission with German Hansa-Brandenberg flying boats defending a destroyer in the North Sea... The D.H.9's came out victorious, with one flyer winning the D.F.C. for successfully bombing and sinking the destroyer AND shooting down an enemy aircraft!

Another entertaining mission was a pair of D.H.4's were on their way to bomb a railyard while escorted by three Sopwith Camels when they were intercepted by L.V.G CV's on their way out to the front for a photo Recon mission, being escorted by a Fokker DVII and two Albatros DVa's. It was a bloody battle, with a DH4 observer being killed and the bombing mission scrapped due to combat engagement. One LVG was forced to turn for home with a smoking engine, and an Albatross exploded mid-air after having its engine shot out by 2 of the Camels!

My Favorite mission had Sopwith Triplanes patrolling the front and encountering Albatros DIIIs. A cat and mouse battle ensued, with the Tripes using their superior speed and manevuerability to try and stay away from the twin guns of the Albs and get on their tail, while the Albs did their best to stick together and force the Tripes to make a mistake. The Tripes did a great job of tailing, but couldnt do significant enough damage before the battle twisted down to the clouds and the Albs escaped with their tails tucked between their legs & licking their wounds.

We also successfully ran a number of miniatures missions, using a mixed bag of WoW miniatures and other 1/144 scale models. 3 Pfalz DIIIa's did their best against 4 SE5as, but alas outnumbered one smoking German was sent to his demise. In a surprising game, 3 Albatros DV's were able to get the upper hand against 3 far superior Sopwith Camels and force them to evade combat.

Was a fun weekend with many laughs and good gaming!
