I wish there were WW1 styled joysticks.
Would it be cool if there were joysticks that looked like WW1 control sticks?

Nice and uncommon question.
They worried even to replicate an F-16 control stick (not to mention the whole cockpit) but none thought about WWI sims. Bad marketing, I think.

I think it should be easy to dismantle a cheap joystick and adapt the innards to a custom made WWI style joystick. A nice project to spend some afternoons while we wait for ROF to be launched...

I looked at this a year or so ago, I bought the plans (download) and I really wanted to build it. Unfortunately the wife went mental at the thought of having this in the house so the plans ended up as a donation to the local Air League unit. The centre stick would be absolutely great for WWI sims, If you stick a big pedastal fan in front of the unit you would really feel "up there". All you need is an understanding partner and a long silk scarf.

Very, very clever. However, I think that the missus is right about having this in the house. Think of the damage a loop or a barrel roll would do to the ceiling.

You can laugh .... sniff! sniff!, but I really havent given up on that one. In fact I might even try again with this slightly more aesthetic device
Dreamflyer
sans pilot of course, the missus really would not be sympathetic to that feature and I am not sure I would understand how it works without instructions anyway, but ....... we can dream

Willi,
Years ago (I remember it was about the same time Dianna Spencer/Windsor died--whatever year that was) there was a fellow from Sweden flying WarBirds/DoA that built his own analog, full-size stick & rudder bar out of wood, wire, pulleys and such. He had plans and the whole shootin' match on how-to up on the web. You might want to search the Way-Back Machine for home-built WarBirds joystick or something along that line. Sorry I couldn't tell you more.
Cheers
Rod
