I don't like it either Willi. With me it's mostly a crotchety old man thing. I just don't feel that if I buy a PC-based game, that I should have to patronize another business (i.e.: my ISP) to play it. Simple. Now, I am sure there are others though that have slow connections that this will affect no matter their feelings towards it. Those folks I really feel for in all of this. However, I am sure it is a business decision that has been well thought out, and I wish them all the game companies out there that have taken this route all the best.

Wait and see..

Looks like the devs have made up their mind on this one, so will just have to wait and see.
My main concern, besides what seems like an inconvenience, to connect to play, and then to conncect again before I end my SP session, is whether it is going to cause problems with my computer. That Star copy protection on the SubSim Silent Hunter 3 caused a lot of problems. I hope there are not problems with ROF, but I'm going to wait awhile after release before jumping into a unknown situation.
Oh.. and I don't play MP, I like SP, and don't see how they are going to even come close to matching the benefits of a dynamic campaign like Over Flanders Fields has and Red Baron

I posted this in another post on RoF,then I came upon this thread so I post it again

Here are some answers to RoF questions from an interview at WW1 Air Combat . com

3. Do I need an internet connection to play ROF?

Yes, because first of all we are talking about online service, where you can get together with many other people with same interests, where you can get in groups and play against other users or AI and many more.

4. What kind of copy protection is used in ROF?
User online authorization, which processed in game GUI each time you startup "Rise of Flight".

5. Can I play ROF in offline mode?
No, you can't.

6. If an internet connection fails while playing ROF, what will happen? Can I start the next mission? Same with career mode, what will happened with my statistics?

"Connection error" message will appear and you will not be able to continue without proper internet connection, thus all statistics will be lost. But if connection to the internet will be reestablished before the end of the mission this problem might not appear. Please note that multiplayer mode will crash due to lack of internet connection.

My outlook on RoF;
Unfortunately most will not purchase RoF because of the fact the game can not be played at all with out an internet connection, not even single player can be played off-line.I see this complaint in every forum I read anything about RoF and this could make or break this game IMHO

Patches will be auto-matically downloaded when going on-line and they say patches are 50 to 200 mb,that takes a good internet connection. Not as they suggest and I quote LOFT from his Blog> "a few packets here and there" and that a simple internet connection will do.Without the patches the game will not start so you have to download the patch or you can not use what you have purchased.

Not a smart move to make an internet connection mandatory IMHO
Could make or break this game!

My interest in ROF is fading fast...
- New system
- Mandatory internet
- A game calling "home" with every run.

It's like a very intruding DRM
Looks like they need to learn the lesson Electronic Arts learned with Spore:

Get rid of DRM or don't sell a single game.
No sale here until I'm sure there is no DRM on the disk.

I'm not going to pollute my system with some sort of Securom or Starforce.
Quote::We do not have content scramble system, thus there is no problems.

hmmm do they mean DRM by that? CSS is for DVD movies
"thus there is no problems" ??

I tried to leave a link to the interview but was not allowed as I am a new member that has not yet made 10 posts.

the interview can be found at> WW1 Air Combat dot com /articles/rise-of-flight-interview-demo-confirmed

Thanks David, will look at it tonight, off to work now.

My only last comment is that, for me, dynamic historical campaign is a make or break situation. I'm not interested in going on line, visiting a bunch of fly buddies and having a shoot-em-up good time.. maybe ocassionally, but the main ingreedient, that OFF and Red Baron had, was the campaign. And custom scripted missions, though also fun, again can't match a historical dynamic campaign. Nuf said.

I don't know of any programs that automatically update and do not give you an option to turn auto-updayes off. Look in the options. Also, your computer needs a fair amount of free space to operate properly. IF you don't have room for a patch you need to remove some stuff.

Bad feeling about it in what way? You seem to have internet, no problem there. Do you think it will reduce sales? Games offered in digital form have been outselling retail boxes for a couple years now. People on dial-up have made the choice not to be anywhere near the edge of online technology. Someone who choses to drive a Model-T can't complain that he has no ABS.

There is a small fringe element that seems to think it is a violation in some way if a game uses their internet connection (which they obviously have to come online to complain about it). I have said it before and I will again... IT IS THE ONLY WAY FOR SMALL COMPANIES TO PREVENT THEFT! Without these things companies like neoqb could not stay in business.

Simple really, live with it or have no companies making games like this... not a hard choice.

Quick check of Empire: Total War, a fairly new game on the market. The 11+ GB download had over 1900 people sharing it, 12000 people downloading it. (I am referring to illegal downloads) Do you think a smaller company like neoqb can sustain that? Do you think they should make the game suceptible to this because an online verification bugs you?..........

This game has only been advertised online, if you are talking about it you have a net connection.

Bleddyn,
You are assuming that the folks that have dial-up have chosen that, and that is very far from the truth in many cases. I live in a small town in a rural area. There are some very real issues in my state with folks getting access to high-speed internet, many areas are only served by dial-up so there is no choice involved.
As for having to use the internet to play the game being a violation, who said that?

Warren
