RoF updates and patches
From other threads here, some quite vehement, it is apparent that an internet connection is a requirement for ROF to run. I understand this is an attempt to prevent piracy, and from what I can gather, it is not very effective in that anyway.
My question is this... When you launch ROF, it establishes a connection to the internet...does it then AUTOMATICALLY update you or include any add-on patches (say to include more flyable aircraft)? Other threads suggest each aircraft may be between $6 and $25 (US currency I'm guessing...a bit more in $AUS)
Does anyone have any idea of how many flyable aircraft are PLANNED? (of course, after the developers have modelled and included all the aircraft they believe is necessary/sufficient, there will be a mountain of mail the likes of "Why isn't the Sopwith Snipe included?", "where is the Fokker xxx and the Halberstadt YYY?)
Four flyable aircraft doesn't make me wish to buy this, nor does the inernet connection REQUIREMENT. Add many more aircraft (at least as many as OFF BHaH) and I might re-consider. Remove the required internet connection and I also might.
But to have to wait months for the next aircraft add-on (and it's an aircraft that you might not prefer to fly, so then another long wait...)

Hi, stevedrew,
I can't answer all your questions yet because the sim just shipped and is still in transit, but if no one else has answered I'll be able to help you out in a few days. Until then, I'll opine that upon connection, game updates will be automatic. This may include new planes as AI, but to "unlock" them to fly you'll need to purchase this from an online store. Forgive me being vague--it's still new to me, too, and I've not done it yet.
Fear not, seems a lot of planes are planned. Check out this link: Gallery - WWI Air Combat flight sims
These screens are from when the sim was called "Knights of the Sky," but I imagine (note, my speculation) that many if not all are planned for release. They released the Dr.I for MSFS, so it already exists. I've seen video with the N28 and Alb D.Va, so they exist. Other planes I've seen modeled include the N.17 (which comes with the Russian version), D.H.4, D.H.9, F.E.2, Pfalz D.III, Pfalz D.XII, Sopwith Camel, Sopwith Strutter, Sopwith Scout, Sopwith Dolphin, Sopwith Triplane, SE5a, Gotha G.V, Bristol F2b, SPAD VII. I think somewhere I saw a D.H.5, too.
Even including those they've a helluvalot to go, but if they come out with those that'll be better than four. (My God, what an incredibly obvious statement...) How long it'll take to release them, I do not know.
Can't wait to fly this baby:

JFM that is a beautiful screen of the Gotha. I remember seeing them in Flyboys, you remember the movie where the Bosch has about 50 Red Barons LOL.
I was thinking about that yesterday when the price of the planes came up and here I was just telling my Day of Defeat Source guys about how anxious we were for the game to come out. Then I see we just have a few flyable aircraft, but you know what guys, in reality I feel that I am just thankful to be able to climb back into any cockpit and share the cyber skies with you all. I am 53 now and it seems the older I get, these young kids coming up now want more and more to have these games that slice and dice or monsters that eat you in the night hah, but my heart will always be up in the clouds sitting behind twin Spandau or twin Vickers with the wind blowing through my scarf and my hands on the throttle and controls. So many flight Sims come with supersonic aircraft that lock onto your 6 o'clock and fire a missile up your tail section. If I can't maneuver around to get on the tail of an enemy plane and see the enemy in front of me then why bother.
Stevedrew, in 1998 and 1999 we flew AW3 (Air Warrior 3) for kesmai, do you remember that? We thought we were in hog heaven then and being that it was WW2 flying we had huge maps that housed over 200-250 players at any given time with about 6 different servers. Of course back then there was no cable connection, at least not that I'm aware of? Moreover, most of us flew on the prehistoric dial-up and we managed nevertheless. We even got to crew a B-17, B-25 or A-26 at the same time with right and left waist gunners, top, belly, nose and even tail with a navigator and pilot. We got to bail out at over 30,000 feet, take 20-30 minutes flying over enemy targets and dropping are eggs on the enemy. I felt bad one time when I was piloting a fortress toward B Country's base and was about 20 minutes into the flight at about angels 20 when my stupid dial up disconnected. Once I disappeared the gunners just bailed out.
Now we have this terrific looking sim coming out which will be on my doorstep in just a few days with graphics that compare the old Atari 2600 to the Xbox 360 LOL. And the old days of flying Red Baron 2 (My first online game) doesn't even stand up to this masterpiece. I do hear where you're coming from though about having to have internet for this sim does make it tough on many people. I just look forward to being able to climb back into that sky once more.
The SPAD XIII was a better aircraft in some aspects than the Fokker D-7, it flew well over 130 MPH and was a very rugged aircraft. Eddie Rickenbacker loved this airplane that could climb near 22,000 feet, however Ernst Udet loved the D-7 for she flew around 116 MPH but was very maneuverable and a deadly killer in the most experienced hands, he claimed most of his 62 kills in this bird. The D-7 didn't come into service until February I believe in 1918?
I still play WOW (Wings of War) by myself but even though it was said it looked too arcadish it has huge maps and many models to fly at different angles. We used to get 14 of on my server and have a ball. They hated it when I'd jump into my Dr-1 because I could turn the tripe in an instant with a twistable joystick. They said, "No way could the real Tripe fighter turn that fast!" and I said, "I beg to differ, Werner Voss with 48 kills could turn his tri-plane in 3 seconds."
Now with RoF of course with real characteristics you had better be careful you don't snap the wings off doing that hehe.
From what I've seen in the videos RoF will rock no doubt, of course this is just my opinion sir. Sorry for the long response.

I guess I shall have to be patient for the reply. I'm very concerned that I have a relatively small allowable download/upload limit on the internet connection that I have, and if I become addicted, I will fly to my heart's content, only to find it has cost me a few hundred bucks.
With that in mind, I'll sit back and wait to see what sort of uploading/downloading the game does when playing single player campaign (as I don't think I'll be playing Multiplayer online for some time even IF I buy this game) I'll be perfectly content to play the campaign in OFF BHaH in the meantime.
