Smile Canvas Knights

Canvas Knights is coming round end of Summer and is a mod of IL-2 1946 WWII Combat Flight sim

CanvasKnights<dot>com

I'm actually more excited about this project than I was about Red Baron II / 3D, which some of you might know I was involved with since it started

The IL-2 engine is very good and can do WWI aircraft, I believe faithfully, even gyroscopic precession .. it is a well known format with great mission builders and great online play.

Canvas Knights progress is going well, at start it will be released with 5 planes per side, 3 fighters, 2 2-seat and a large bomber on each side .. really more in that Albatros D.III, Camel and Fokker D.VII should have 2 varieties each .. Zep will likely be included

All should be flyable .. 2-seat and bombers should have option of human gunners .. perhaps, again, Zep might have these features too

Canvas Knights will have, (EDIT) potentially more scope and play value than RoF, OFF or even Red Baron

In contrast to RoF also, it's IL-2 engine can be played on systems several years old .. I play IL-2 1946 very smoothly on a P4 2.4 with a nVidia 7600 GS AGP card .. actually played original IL-2 Stromovik on a PIII 667 with 32MB card, though not effectively

I've been a member here for about 11 years, and other than Red Baron II / 3D, I've never posted about any other WWI sim .. I do think this will be very good and all it will cost is a copy of IL-2 1946 at about $15

It won't have quite the beautiful graphics as RoF, nor it's amazing crash damage modeling, but IL-2 is quite sophisticated in it's physics, for instance control wires are modeled point to point, and if a bullet severs a rudder control wire within the fuselage, it will act as it would in reality.

Several 'professional' level people are working on this, particularly the primary modeler Deutchmark .. who is a WWI aviation fanatic for many years

Sounds good

Flybert, thanks for the update on Canvas Wings. Are you a member of the developement team? Just wonder so I can judge the reliability of your statements. Maybe I should know that you are but I don't, sorry. I welcome all your news about CK and I'm excited too. I take issue with your comments regarding scope though.
"Canvas Knights will have more scope than Rise of Flight in many respects, and in the longer term, much more scope and play value than RoF, OFF or even Red Baron"
Seems a very difficult claim to make at this time all things considered. RoF and OFF BH&H are both works in progress and will both be improving and adding more aircraft. I understand the intention is to be fabulous, best wishes with that. I would hope dissing other sims is not going to be a part of the Canvas Knights information campaign. I hope to meet in CK multi-player this fall.

I'm not *dissing* RoF nor OFF, sorry if it seems that way to you ..

it is certainly not a choice of any one over the other .. Canvas Knights is a mod, not a commercial release, though there is that possibility just as OFF went commercial

You can trust my words, I'm not a member of the *official* development team, yet talk ( in TS ) almost daily with Deutchmark and other development team members .. I own the Canvas Knights websites with the development team's and AAA's blessing and am promoting the project .. simple as that.

EDIT: I have tentative ok now to co-ordinate the SinglePlayer side of Canvas Knights .. you might be interested to know our schemes and markings consultant is Robert Pearson .. my ultimate goal is for Canvas Knights to have at least the scope of Red Baron's Campaign .. more Aces and greater historical accuracy.

While it might take months to bring enough aircraft into the game to accomplish this, and more time to cover the whole of WWI period, it will be easy for users to add missions and theatres of operation as the appropiate aircraft become available.

Thank You

Flybert, thanks for the further information. I don't doubt your intentions. I have been learning what I can at AAA. As a matter of fact just picked up my copy of IL 2 '46 today. I agree we do not have to choose one sim over another. I wish you all success with the web-site and I look forward to CK especially online. I'm going to look for your website next. Are they up now?
