My Airco DH4 for FS

Thought you might like to see the DH4 I'm currently making for FS. Early stages thus far, but still worth a look. The astute amongst you will recognise this as the mount of 'Mr Biggles' himself, WE Johns:

A bit more tweaking done to the visual model (still a lot to do, including proper texturing and a lot more 'sticky out bits, such as the machine guns, engine, rigging etc), but here she is taking to the air in FS to check control surface animations:

On the subject of which, someone might know the answer to this one: I've got the DH4 listed as being able to do 143 mph at cruise altitude. I do know that despite the 'flaming coffin' nickname, the DH4 was well liked by its crews because of the speed it possessed, but 143 mph seems very fast for something of that size and weight, even with a Rolls Royce Eagle engine. So does anyone know if that figure is genuine, or is it more like a 'brochure figure' than a typical one?

Hi Al --thats VERY fast--the range of speeds on the back page of profile no.26--by J.M.Bruce--gives 'typical' speeds of 120 at 6,500 feet---dropping to 100 approx. at 15,000feet--with one exception A7446 recording very much higher at those altitudes respectively--136.5 and 126 m.p.h.---but this was a combo. of the airframe and R.R. Eagle V111.

Cheers,
Dave.

Figured as much - I'm just off into Manchester to pick up a copy of the book you mention, since this has been modeled purely with the two three-view schematics in Jane's Fighting Aircraft of WW1, which itself is a good book, but I think I need some better pics!

Back from a very damp Manchester, minus thirty quid, but with two decent reference books for the DH4, those being De Havilland Aircraft of WW1 (volume 1: DH1 - DH4), and the Squadron Signal Aircraft No 164 de Havilland DH9 In Action (not the DH4 of course, but basically the same aircraft) - that has some good cockpit shots, which I was on the lookout for.

The first book has some really good three-view drawings of those four different DHs in it, but more importantly at the moment, lists the DH4 with the RR Eagle as being capable of 133.5 mph at 10,000 feet, so I think if I can tune the thing up to anywhere between 120 and 130 at about 8,000 feet, then it will be close enough.

Managed to tweak up a photograph of WE Johns and place him as the pilot, a few other tweaks to the flight model also done, still a lot of modeling to go, but it's shaping up:

Looks great - i've managed to unwittingly win a copy of Microsoft FS X - will the DH4 work for that? Looking forward to trying some WW1 aircraft

Yes, it will work for FSX. I'm making it in FSDS, and to create an FSX or FS9 model, its is normally simply a case of choosing which sim, out of the two, that you want a model for, and exporting it with the relevant settings.
