What does that hand signal mean?

In ROF vids I notice that theres a hand signal in which the pilot raises his arm up with a clentched fist. What does that mean?

clenched fist

It means

"constipated"

When the fist is pumped up and down, it means

"I wish I hadnt worn my good Pyjamas under my flying coat".

No really...

It means,

"We are the Champions my Friend! And We'll keep on fighting to the End.
We Are the Champions.
We are the Champions.
No time for loosers cause we are the Champions of the world"

(Try singing this without a raised fist in the air... its impossible)

WW1 pilots were often noted holding a burning cigarette lighter, upright in the clenched fist during this signal...

alternate reply

I believe that in Prussian Jastas the signal was (originally) actually a polite request to step out for a toilet break. After a run of initially unexplained casualties amongst the members of the Jastas, the signal was revised to the aforementioned "constipation".
Pilots were requested to remain stoic in thier discomfort but were indeed permitted to express thier discomfort in a noted break from accepted Prussian practices.
Bavarian Jasta use of the symbol has not yet been determined.

Hi , Although the signal probably does mean exactly what Sheppo said in the Ozy army , (or perhaps , "Chuck us another beer , mate ! )..... Elsewhere the clenched fist , up & down signal , is / was pretty universaly derived , I believe , from cavalry signal to advance . JM

As far as I am informed it simply means: „off we go!“

The upright fist means: “ready”, if its moved up and down, it means “Move, Go, Start now”.

My information is based on the fact, that this hand sign was stilled used in WWII and is still used in the Bundeswehr, mainly by the drivers of trucks, tanks etc.
It may derivate from the cavalry.

Thomas.

You Don't Know, Do You?

Dear Willi,

When working around loud equipment, a clenched fist is a hand signal that means "STOP".

My dear boy,the original use by WWI Fliers was universally accepted as:

"CURSE YOU.... RED BARON!".

I hope that this has been a help to you.

HAPPY TRAILS, FOKKERJ

I believe this requires the middle finger to be extended.
