Smile Real (?) PLM...

For anyone interested, Detlev Niemann has another PLM currently being offered on his website. He sold one with a baroque loop, cased, with some documentation a few weeks ago for about 31K. I believe it was a Wagner piece. This week he has a pie-slice one with original Godet ribbon. The piece is not stamped for silver or hallmarked but bears the attributes of Godet. This one is offered at $16,750.00 You can use the photos to compare the quality of the finish with the one on e-Bay. HF

OK then - who makes the best PleM reproduction ?

I have a very old half enameled version which is standing in for a more convincing repro in a reproduction display of Buchner's awards and the only piece not original is the PleM. Since I don't have an extra $16,000 laying around, I'm looking for a nice, two-sided convincing looking repro.

Any suggestions ?

Mike

There are very high quality copies made somewhere in Europe (that often turn up on the market as 1920's - 1930's wearer's copies). They are available brand new from one dealer in the U.S. - he has a web site called Der Dienst which mostly deals in 3rd Reich repros. However, his price for the high quality repro is around $500. I suspect someone else must be selling them in Europe for less, but so far I have not found a source.

There are two older repros that are very high quality. The Steinhauer & Lueck pieces I mentioned earlier are quite good, and you might be able to find one for only a couple of hundred dollars if you can find someone honest enough to sell it for what it is. Detlev Niemann occasionally has them for around 200 euros.

Also, the Rothe pieces are very nice, but sell for easily $500. Due to a slew of bad information that has been published by people who should have known better, some of the Rothe copies are believed by some people to be absolutely original awarded examples. Many Rothe pieces turn up with "W" of "JGuS" makers marks, and apparently this has been happening for many years. That has created a lot of confusion. John Angolia's book "The Pour le Merite and Germany's First Aces" depicts nothing but Rothe copies, all represented as original awards. Needless to say, that can drive the price up on the Rothe pieces as people who have read that book, as well as other flawed reference sources, might get rather excited when they see one for sale for a few hundred dollars.

To be fair, Ive heard of some reasons to bid with these 'User ID kept private' ebay types.
In the past, in some cases ,'sellers' are targeted by nosey, vindictive, and irritating 'experts' pretending, and acting like some kind of ebay 'police' in that particular field.
They take it on themselves to contact buyers and 'put them off', Unfortunately some even do this to put off prospective competition buyers so that they can buy at a cheaper price !!!!!!!!

But in general ................. AS SOON AS YOU SEE ..........'ID KEPT PRIVATE' AND 'FEEDBACK PRIVATE' .............. then avoid them like you would MvR with the sun behind you.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My observations over the years are that you are likely to be buying rubbish from a seller whose only interest is hiding from any sort of scrutiny........when ebay bans 'id privates' and 'private feedback' the better overall.
