UNUSUAL EHRENBECHER--Can anyone ID this?

UNUSUAL EHRENBECHER--Can anyone ID this?

Like the regular Bechers it has a Kogenluft stamp on the base. Hallmarks on the side of the goblet are, left to right: moon; crown; 800; and eagle.

Geez

That's an awesome looking goblet....... but the date of May 31, 1915?? There is no May 31? Not now, not then??

Otherwise I'd be inclined to call it some type of bombing award with the God Thor (Tor) on there!

Well I know nothing at all about this subject matter but if you "Google" the date you come up with lots of quotes along the following lines:

"The first Zeppelin raid on London was at midnight on May 31st 1915, when Hauptmann Linnarz bombed the capital killing seven people and making £18,000 worth of damage".

Relevant or complete red herring, I've no idea.

I think Mike's right.

I cannot seem to find anything major as regards aeroplane victories over Britain or the Western front on this date.

Maybe it was handed to Linnarz?

Very interesting, it looks just like my uncle's goblet, even with the "Chef des Feldflugwesens" mark on it. This should be put up on wehrmacht-awards.com for more info. I'd like to hear Stogieman's opinion on this piece.

hey, I am stogieman!

I love the goblet, looks quite correct to me and even without seeing the marks, they are correctly described for a period piece. While the crown is irrelevant to badges, I have yet to see a goblet without one.

Alas, I am getting old to the point that apparently for the last several years i have missed May 31st every time it happens! Gee I feel dumb!

In fact......

...... my only objection was the date.... I think you have a real prize.. all my "gut call" bells are ringing loud and clear. I like it!

Stogie, since this goblet has the official marks on it, do you think it was created in the same fashion as the Ehrenbecher, with the stipend coming from captains of industry etc? Or was this something privately created using a blank Ehrenbecher? I find it quite fascinating.

Here are the hallmarks...

Here is a side detail showing oakleaves and hallmarks from the side of the Becher, basically the same position as on the regular Becher...

left to right: Moon ; Crown ; 800 ; Prussian Eagle.
