Iron Cross Inscription

I am trying to identify the recipient of an Iron Cross First Class. The reverse is engraved with the following:

A.U.
Arras, Verdun, Ypern, Palastina
"Konigl. Preuss. Jagdstaffel 7"
26.7.1917

I am assuming the initial are those of the recipient.
The second line are battles.
The third is "Royal Prussen Jagstaffel 7"
The date I assume is when it was awarded.

There was no ace listed with those initial in Jasta 7 so I am assuming he probably did not receive the IC for aerial combat. Any help or suggestions?

Hi,

digging through the "Jasta Pilots" I found a Feldwebel (Fw) Ulbrich, who made 2 aerial victories during his time with Jasta 7 (last week of march 1917).

In July/ August 1918 he was in Jasta 27 --- no further info is given (or accessable

Iron Cross Inscription

Thanks FrontFlieger. Was Ulrich's first initial "A"? Also, does anyone know how to find out details of the citations accompanying Iron Cross awards or military records of specific Jasta pilots? Also is it possible to determine if Jasta 7 pilots were in action at the battles listed on the inscription? Thanks.

This would have been Vzfw. Albert Ulricht. He served with Jasta 7 from 22Feb17 to 4Oct17. Jasta 7 served in 5. Armee during Feb - April 1917 which would account for the mention of Verdun. During May and early June 1917 they were in 6. Armee, which would encompass Arras. From early June to at least Aug 17 they were in the 4. Armee which would include Ypern. This covers his "battles" up to the date of award. Obviously Jasta 7 never served in Palastine, and I can only assume this may refer to some prior service before he became a Jasta pilot. FWIW. R.

Could you post any photos of this piece, as it sounds very interesting.

Iron Cross Inscription

I have tried to cut and paste the image from both Microsoft Word and Adobe Photoshop, but it will not paste into this message. Is there a secret how to do it?

Did you save your images in an image format (i.e., gif, jpeg, or png)? Once you've done that you should be able to attach the file in your post.

Alternatively, you can upload the image file (again in gif, jpeg, or png format) to a free online image host like http://imageshack.us/ and then insert a pathway link in your post.
