As we all know, the Ordern Pour Le Merite was dubbed by German aviators "Blue Max" in honour of
Max Immelmann, who received the first award made to an airman (on the same day as Boelcke). Why wasn't it called the "Blue Oswald" instead?
Furthermore, what was this decoration referred to by the other branches of the Armed forces? For instance, the navy had it's own heroes but I've yet to hear of any nickname that it may have used for this prestigous award. Was this solely an airman's affectation?
We all use "Blue Max' in the most casual manner, but was it's usage in WW1 as commonplace as we take for granted?
