Real... only what is real is problems. In the mid of '90 Russia is open to the world and from there was possible to buy original wartime decoration at only 5 Deutche Mark for one WW2 Eisen Kreutz. Just some later perfect copy's appeared on the market. Only way to buy original is to personally know seller and get his guarantee that this is original.

There is no way to tell whether it is real or not from the photo. With rare medals like PLM's one should always assume they are not real until they are proven otherwise. While there are countless cheap forgeries that are easy for most anyone to spot, modern forgery techniques are now to the point where high tech equipment is easy to buy and forgers have access to the same information on how to tell a forgery from a fake as the best experts have. Even the best experts have a hard time telling the difference. Many of these fakes seem to come from places where law enforcement on forgers is not strong such as is found in parts of the former Soviet Union and many Asian countries where counterfeiting rings of forgers can set up their workshops to make such things.

Hi Santtu,

I don't think enough people are noticing your post, try mentioning "Pour Le Merite" and / or Blue Max in the heading. I think you will attract more views.

Also, if you could get higher resolution photos in brighter light, it may help, once you get more people looking at it.

Hope It's Real! ...................See Ya, Pete

The makers usually stamp the medals with their hallmark or logo.
I know that W for wagner was on a lot of Blue Max medals.
Many pilots had their personal jewlers make copies for them and kept the originals under lock and key.

Try this website: Der Dienst: Militaria,Military medals, badges, insignia 1775-1945. Replicas

If I'm not mistaken the guy that owns this company has Von Schlecht's original Blue Max

One last clue. The oak leaves were rare as this was considered a double presentation of the max.
The oak leaves and the paperclip hangers for the ribbon should all have a hallmark somewhere on them.

Good luck....Red

A more careful examination is needed. The weight and size will have to be know along with any maker marks would help. Sometimes even the name would be engraved on the side.

Take a look at this:
The Typology of the Pour le Mérite

Then:
The Godet made Pour le Mérite

Hope this helps...

Lloyd...
