Ken- Could be his. I have the data plate from one of his Fokker D.VII aircraft. Rank and Jasta match on the pilot badge. Even though a PLM winner, Thom is not exactly a household name among WW-I enthusiasts.
Thanks for the heads-up.

Taz,
The engraving looks to be of the style used on many WWI German badges of the period. So who knows?? It would be a nice addition to the data plate though, if you could get it for good price??
Good Luck!

Didn't Karl Thom go missing in Russia during WW2? It would be interesting to know where this turned up...

Hi,
I studied these badges in detail several years back. I found that there are many, many copies out there. If anyone is seriously interested in this badge, they should get better close-up photos (the ones provided are not detailed enough to determine authenticity).
For great discussions on this type of badge, go here:

I have seen not long ago a fake badge of Karl Menckhoff, where his name was engraved as Meckhof or something. It was stated it would be an original. I would never buy such a badge on ebay for myself. There must be many of fake copies beeing around.

I would add my vote to those who say this is a fantasy made to deceive. From what I can see, everything about it not right. The detailing is not even close to what real originals have, and the engraving on the back is poorly done and you can see things like the underlying lines where the amateurish engraver did not quite follow. Not even an apprentice jeweler of the day would have let something like that quality of engraving out of their shop. Finally, if it were real it would not have a starting bid of $60 or an estimate of $300 to $1,200 - it would be sold through a private sale to a serious collector for at least ten times that amount - or even more.
