Numbers of medals awarded

In case anyone is interested, from entries in the London Gazette for the period up to 31 December 1920, I have identified the following numbers of gallantry awards to members of the flying services:

Victoria Cross = 19
Distinguished Service Order = 275 + 27 1st Bars + 2 2nd Bars
Distinguished Service Cross = 259 + 39 1st Bars + 7 2nd Bars
Military Cross = 999 + 113 1st Bars + 10 2nd Bars
Distinguished Flying Cross = 1,116 + 75 1st Bars + 4 2nd Bars
Air Force Cross = 677 + 2 1st Bars
Albert Medal = 18
Distinguished Conduct Medal = 102 + 1 1st Bar
Conspicuous Gallantry Medal = 4
Distinguished Service Medal = 225 + 6 1st Bars
Military Medal = 243 + 2 1st Bars
Distinguished Flying Medal = 108 + 2 1st Bars
Air Force Medal = 125 + 2 1st Bars
Meritorious Service Medal = 992

Most awards to officers, unless in the New Year's or Birthday honours lists, have a citation while few awards to Other Ranks have a citation

Hi Scott

More years than I care to think about! I first started visiting the Guildhall Library (close to where I then worked in London) back in the mid-1980s and spent my lunch hours there, trawling through editions of the London Gazette and making longhand notes. I was also getting information from the PRO so never worked exclusively on any one project and it wasn't until I was made redundant (for the first time) in the early 90s that I got a PC and began collating all the data for awards, claims, casualties etc.

So, overall, over 25 years' research - and I still haven't finished!

So far, my database has details of 10,644 awards (home-grown and Allied nations') up to 31 December 1920. For the bulk of these I have either a paper copy of the Gazette in which the announcement appears or the Gazette as a pdf file. One of my (ongoing) projects is to identify the unit for each recipient of an award.
