Question Prussian observer's badge

I need some help. I was recently offered a Prussian Observer's badge. Because of the huge number of excellent repros out there, I am generally reluctant to make such a purchase, but this one looks pretty good. My only question arises from the red enamel on the badge. It gives an almost dappled appearance, as if it is translucent and you can see the metal below. Other badges I have seen have had a solid red appearance similar to the black and white enamel found in the center of the badge.

I would appreciate any thoughts and advice. I don't believe a photo would show the condition, so I have not posted one.

Thanks.

Prussian Observer's Badge

Hello cameldriver. Have a look at an informational article on Andreas M. Schulze Ising's website on Imperial German Flight Badges which also includes information on observer badges at Medalnet.net as well as examine observer badges shown on Helmut Weitze website. Lots of little things to note between reproductions and authentic pieces. Knowledge is paramount before parting with hard earned money. Best regards, Dave.

Good advice from Malaula, and you might want to check out GMIC.co.uk for more expert opinions. I have a couple of these, and have seen far too many good fakes floating around.

Thanks to both of you for your information and good advice. Have either of you experienced badges with the shimmery, translucent red enamel as I described?

i have a number of observer badges none with the metal shining through all are solid red. The fakes out there are absolutly briliant to the extent that there is a disagreement amongst the experts to all badges sporting crown and half moon on a rayed back in silver by junker.... it really makes sense to buy only when there is provenance or a good story that support the circumstances. Dealer often are no guarantee some knowingly some unknowingly sell these repros. Be especially wary of any of the so called after war productions. Also many fabricated trench art items incorporating badges are dodgy. I believe that in my collection 5 of the 6 first badges I bought are ;o( fakes.....
i have some on display @ Jasta 11 - wwi Aviation if u want to take a look

I agree with Wulffo about the importance of rock solid provenance when paying serious money for WW I aviation badges. There are so many exceptionally professionally done fakes out there that I am at the point of not being willing to pay any more than the price of a fake for any badge that does not have unquestionable provenance. I am sure I lose out on a real one now and then because of this, but I also avoid losing big money for fakes the other 99 percent of the time.

Prussian Observer's Badge

No cameldriver, I have not encountered a Prussian Observer's badge having translucent red enamel. I have only encountered the red outline enamel as being opaque like the black/white checked center insignia. Best regards, Dave.
