Actually what I find sad is that such collectors cannot see the benefit of donating the collection in its entirety to an established museum or university for preservation, display, research.
History is filled with "collections" that are parsed out and virtually dissapear from the public eye.....in otherwords, it becomes history lost but for a few mantle pieces at a dinner party.
If done right, there are significant tax and estate advantages for these kinds of donations and can benefit people with such wealth if preservation of their wealth is primary concern. We all die someday and can't take it with us.
