Living with Red Baron disease / estate sale

Apparently this guy has a lot of stuff. Anyone with a few million, start the bids:

....and a triplane in the yard. Bet his wife wished he took up fishing instead!

I'll bet alot of things such as MvR's cup collection surfaces in this auction. He claims to even have his leather flying jacket. Sure would like to see this stuff before it goes away!

Before the collection is gone, it would be very nice to have it carefully photographed, documented and published in a book so we'd at least have that much. This would in some way preserve it and a story about the collection would make a great subject!

Love that photo of the triplane on the front lawn! My dream home!

VBR...

Just curious, does anyone know where the Baron's Spandaus are located?

THe guns were parted out. I've seen a flash damper and the two gun locks in Carisella's book years ago. Bet there are parts in many places.

Actually what I find sad is that such collectors cannot see the benefit of donating the collection in its entirety to an established museum or university for preservation, display, research.

History is filled with "collections" that are parsed out and virtually dissapear from the public eye.....in otherwords, it becomes history lost but for a few mantle pieces at a dinner party.

If done right, there are significant tax and estate advantages for these kinds of donations and can benefit people with such wealth if preservation of their wealth is primary concern. We all die someday and can't take it with us.

Hi all,

On those MvR guns I'm tempted to speculate that they are still intact.

In the photos of the officers standing by the wreckage you can see the two Spandaus leaning against the fuselage. The booster/flash-hider assembly is completely missing from one of the guns, the other has the flash-hider missing. Both guns have the trigger locks already missing as evidenced by the charging/clearing levers being in the forward position. This happens when you remove the trigger lock and then proceed to lever the gun with the charging/clearing handle and the linkage that the trigger lock threads into drops down and jams the whole thing up, leaving the handle in the forward "2 o'clock" position. I seem to recall that Carisella had one trigger lock, (1795a), which now resides in New Zealand.

Best,
Dave W.

Sad news folks. It appears a Wingnut has out bid us for the collection by two million dollars.
