The Real Deal This Time?

There is another autographed Sanke card, number 503, of Manfred von Richthofen offered for sale on Ebay. The seller says he got it from the von Osten family and it is signed in pencil after Richthofen's 20th victory. Unusual to see a card like this signed in pencil.

Richthofen signature

Margaret,

Thank you for posting this! For reference it is Item number: 6616968645. I know that Manfred would write in pencil. The information though on the date on the card is confusing. The description states that the date 14.02.17 is written on the card with the number 20 and that MvR signed this card after *his* 20th victory. February 14, 1917 is the date of MvR's 20th. To clarify a little, von der Osten was credited with only 5 victories and did not join the Jagdstaffel until August 1917.

I saw the card today too, and the discrepancy between when the card was supposedly signed, and von der Osten's arrival several months later seems odd.

Bodenschatz describes how he was able to use the signed cards almost like currency to add to the unit mess, but I don't know of any other MvR cards signed this way, with a date and a "score", if thats what it refers to.

What do y'all think? Is that a legitimate signature, even in pencil, or not?
