Help old lady sell artifacts

Hi all,

I have a friend that passed away and the wife needs to sell several items. I'm looking for help with values on the following items. If you're not comfortable giving me an exact number, give me a range. She is asking me to be in charge of selling these items, so you can keep that in mind. I'm not listing these items for sale at this time and I hope I'm not breaking some rule of the site for posting this stuff, but I figure we can all learn from this.

I know the basics on this stuff like trench art, gernades, or flare gun, I was hoping for a little more specifics. I appreciate any help.

Identification as well as value estimate both needed.

continued....

Thank you for your help guys and girls!

Best,
Dave W.

Dave, you might also want to try posting at www.gmic.co.uk. They have a Guest valuation section. The people there are as expert as those on Forum (heck, some of them are from the Forum), and very friendly.

Thanks for the inclusion, Dave, although I have no idea as to the values of your items. However, I'll bet Matt Witt would have some good input for you an the clothing items and Joe Gertler on the artifacts. I suggest you PM them directly.

Hi all,

Michael, thanks for the website, I'll give it a try.

AAA, thanks for your suggestions, I hope Matt will drop me a line.

Joe and Pete, thanks for contacting me via the personal messages.

I'll give a shot on identifying the stuff photo by photo and maybe someone will be inclined to correct me.

Photo 1;

Trench art artillery shells. None appear to have much art work so $50 - $75 value per piece.

Photo 2;

WW1, Three inert artillery projectiles, large one with American Legion decal most likely war souvenir value $120, small projectiles also most likely war souvenirs, each worth approx. $45. Two German gernades; one marked "6 1/2 Sek.K8N" value approx. $125, one unmarked, painted red with belt clip value approx. $100.

Photo 3;

WW1, Flare gun, most likely US or possibly British manufacture. Maybe Naval as it is made of brass/bronze. Value approx. $195.

Photo 4;

WW1, Five doughboy American trench helmets, approx. value $55 each. Flying helmet most likely US or British manufacture. Value approx. $250.

Photo 5;

You guys are going to make me guess, aren't you!

First group of three WW1 hats;
1st; French officers hat. Approx. value $125. 2nd; US Navy officers duty hat. Approx value $65. 3rd; US Navy officers dress hat. Approx value $70.

Second group of four WW1 hats;
1st; US Navy petty officers hat. Approx value $50. 2nd (foreground); US Navy possibly pre-WW1 officers duty hat. Approx value $125. 3rd; Marine Corps officers hat. Approx value $75. 4th; Marine Corps enlisted mans hat. Approx value $55.

Photo 6;

WW1, Bomb sight of US manufacture. Approx. value $300.

Photo 7;

WW1, Rim winder clock of US manufacture. Approx value $395.

Photo 8;

WW1, Dixie Mag switch aircraft type, US manufacture possibly for OX5. Approx. value $300.

How far off am I?

Best,
Dave W.

I think the WWI helmets may be low. I think there was a thread over on gmic dealing with such. Doughboy helmet.

Dave,
Assuming, you have a digital camera, could you photograph and post more details on the underside of the flying helmet? Get really close-up for any manufacture markings, strap buckles, etc. Thanks.

Dave; The Dixie (dual) mag switch is good for OXX-6 or Hisso or DUAL magneto engines. This one is not for OX-5 ( has single mag). Would be worth more, if it was.
As to headgear and uniform collections, their value has been rising sharply over the past year or so. (Ebay and other auction influences....) as well as several Internet sites of militaria collectors forums (with sale and trade sections)
