'Destruction of a Zeppelin' postcards

'Won' these postcards of a Zeppelin being downed somewhere over England last night on ebay, to go with my rapidly mounting collection of books/postcards etc on the German bombing campaign on the UK 1914-18. I was wondering if anyone knew how real these postcards actually were (ie are they doctored real photos, or completely fake), and if they were supposed to depict the downing of any particular Zeppelin, or, Schutte-Lanz (although to the public and media at the time, any German airship was a Zeppelin).

Cheers, Rob

I think these are "artist's impressions" of Leefe Robinson's shooting down of the SL11 over Cuffley on 3 September 1916. There a great deal of publicity about this event as it was the first airship to be shot down over the UK.

Nice to have the whole set!
I have owned one of these before and believe that at least one is based on a real photographic image. The set does purport to show the destruction of SL11.

At that point in the war the zeppelins typically were bombing from an altitude around 10,000 feet or higher. A real photo of a zeppelin at that height would have the airship appear too small for such a dramatic postcard.

Hello,
if you had one of the first two photos magnified we could be sure whether it was a Schütte-Lanz airship, but from this size it is hard to tell ... first looks like a Zeppelin airship, but the second more than an SL. Or does it lose its gondolas on the second photo ?
Greetings,
Catfish

I reckon it's a Schutte Lanz myself - I don't have a scanner at the moment, but when I get back home as soon as my University term is over, i'll scan in the photos so I can get some close ups for you
