Ernst Udet's albums on ebay

Hi All,

I guess I might as well spill the beans. Just like Regulus in regard to the auction of Christiansen's albums, I'm very angry that no less than seven of Udet's own personal albums are being auctioned soon by Hermann Historika:

6276: Ernst Udet - sieben Fotoalben - eBay (item 180224036497 end time Apr-15-08 13:00:00 PDT)

Of course, the main reason I'm angry is that I can't afford to bid anywhere in the universe of these auctions. These will go for thousands and thousands of dollars/euros. I only hope somebody or some institution that will act in a responsible and sharing manner is successful in getting these, and that we eventually see these photos published somewhere.

Greg

I'm right there with you, mate- that feeling of utter powerlessness in regards of something one really cares about is quite nasty.

And just like with the Christiansen Albums, I get the same damnable "Nazi Memorabilia Block" info. I'm used to getting it when checking out German Cavalry items from between c.a. 1925 and 1945, but this is getting ridiculous!

Greg, Otto- We just know there is a photo of DDN! in the lot, which would answer half our questions on that aircraft. Plus some Dr.I photos as well. We should have clued in Peter or someone who could afford the albums. Might be worth asking if he picked them up. Deep pockets, indeed.

Sometimes I wish I didn't read this stuff....then I wouldn't know about all the wonderful things that are being sold to Mr. Deep Pocket$$ and life wouldn't hurt as much. Anyway...I just finished viewing all of the auction listings. There are several photo albums, a pilot's helmet, a postcard of MvR signed in March 1918 probably one his last, and a Navy award cup amongst the lot.

Here are some numbers of a few of these things...

180224036584

180224036590

180224036454

180224036483

180224036760

Hoping for a good home for these!

If I could buy this I would and preserve this history for all to share with the publication of these fantastic photo that need to be seen but I can't. So I hope that the buyer will take into consideration the importances of these albums.

Spread the word to everyone you know, an email campaign should be undertaken to spread the word. Maybe there will be hope that someone in our ear shoot will take up these albums and do what is right and just.

The other thing that could be done is a group of you could combine there buying power to have control on these albums. There are options and they should be explored.

Greg, if you could find 7-10 people that could all put in $1,000.00 then we could have a chance. Just trying to help.

Lloyd...

Hi BismarcksOtto,

This is all that I could find:

6276: Ernst Udet - sieben Fotoalben

Album "Siemens-Flugmotoren". Ledereinband 23 x 33 cm.

Pretty scary stuff!

I don't know what's worse: not being allowed to see this , or not much to see!
I would think that the seller would bring out the "BIG GUNS" to wet the appetite and achieve a bigger profit!

Very Best Regards, FOKKERJ

P.S. Don't tell Kilian, but there's a "SIEMENS FLUGMOTOREN" Buch!

How do you know...

...that a successful buyer wouldn't be interested to make available the materials for research purposes? Presumably the only people interested in bidding will be those interested in the subject (maybe one of us with deep pockets).

I know I am being perhaps optimistic here whereas some of you are rightly worried about such materials disappearing into private hands.

CHAPPIE mentions he has a "line" to Peter... Chappie?

A good question FOKKERJ, on this example! But there are a lot of other things on ebay.com that is not allowed to german eyes. For example Luftwaffen-pilots goggles or the like - do we life in China? Not every german buyer is a Hakenkreuz-collector

I agree, it would be a real pity if these pictures vanish off the face of the earth

Perhaps we should do something with a number of people together in the future ? If we can buy such albums with a bumber of us together and take a scan of the whole lot for all buyers together and afterwards sell them to a museum or so ?
Even if one does loose a bit on the sale, everybody would have the collection in digital version, it would be preserved for the next generations and so would the originals.
Just some loud wishfull thinking...
