The last austro-Hungarian ww1 veteran died yesterday at the age of 107. Franz Künstler had served in the austro-Hungarian army and fought on the Italian front. He took the German nationality in 1946.

Franz Künstler came from a German familiy which migrated to Rumania in the 18th.cent ("Rumänendeutscher")
Therefore he served, after the occupation of Rumania in 1916, in the k.u.k. Artillery from Febr. to Oktober 1918 at the italian front.

When asked about his experience, he answered: "What is war, but young people kill young people..."

He went to Germany afterwards and became a German citizen.
He was very fit until recently and looked great. No one would ever come to the idea that he was 107 years old.

He was the oldest living German and the last "german" soldier of WWI.
