American Observation Balloon
First, Sreiko - great artwork - wow! Would love to have that talent and skill set.
Second, here is an image of American Caquot balloon - you can make out the ropes as they extend forward and then there is a person standing in the near right corner not far from the photographer.
No date on this one - but...a bit of a clue as to who might have taken the picture or been in it somewhere:
With that information I tossed about the net. Mr. Corwin was born in 1887 and died in 1968 from one genealogical listing. I went into ancestry - don't subscribe - but was able to access a WWI Draft Registration Card that matches the name and birth date - assuming this is the same person.
I am asking a cousin who does subscribe to ancestry to pull the Ohio Military Men of 1917-1918 material on ancestry to see if the squadron is listed and then see if I can match that up with an American observation unit.
Cool image and fun to play slueth!

Morning Folks -
Well seems there ws some additional information on Thomas Corwin in Ancestry as I indicated. Here is that OHIO WWI listing:
Ohio Military Men, 1917-18
Name: Thomas I. Corwin
Serial Number: 2432123
Race: W
RESIDENCE: 720 Martin St., Greenville, O.
Enlistment Division: National Army
Enlistment Location: Darke Co, O.
Enlistment Date: 28 Apr 1918
Birth Place: Gordon, O.
Birth Date / Age: 31 1/12 Years
Assigns Comment: Co C 308 Engineers to Discharge Private Aisne-Marne; Oise-Aisne; Meuse-Argonne; Defensive Sector. American Expeditionary Forces 4 June 1918 to 26 June 1919. Honorable discharge 7 July 1919.
Volume #: 4
So it gives us a rough time period for the picture after 4 Jun 1918 and before the end of the year. Also a bit about the name inscribed. Not much else to say, just wanted to close the loop on that one.

Hi, Ritterton/guys.
Sorry I'm a couple of pages late, but if it's any help, here are a few details about the crashed Sopwith Pup:
Serial No. N6464, of 3 (Naval) Squadron.
Shot down while on escort duties over Bourlon at approximately 3:40 pm, on 11th May 1917.
Pilot: Lt. J. Bampfylde-Daniel, who was wounded and made a POW.
Possibly shot down by Oblt. Adolf Ritter von Tutschek, of Jasta 12, for his 7th victory.
Hope that helps.
Bucky
Most excellent thread BTW!

Hi again, Ritterton.
Interesting to think that your Pup photo was taken precisely 92 years ago this coming Monday!...
Bought any more lately?

Wow - I hadn't thought ofthat Bucky - I did start a balloon thread as I received three that I had won over the past month or so. I put bids and if they exceed the small amount I am going to have to spend, they pass me by. There is a shop that I hope to make it back to where the individual has a few WWI RPCs that appear to be of the "roving photographer" type. So, we shall see if I make it down there next weekend.
Take care.
