Alex, what a terrific contribution! Thank you so much for sharing. I surely enjoyed our off-forum exchanges.

Interesting to me (having known a couple hundred aces) that Heurtaux would sign a photo of himself as a casualty in the hospital! Apparently he was more self-confident than most.

I have enjoyed our off forum exchanges as well. Yes, it's an interesting observation you make. I have another signed Heurtaux picture, i will try and scan and post that one.

Yes, the Heurtaux photo is the most affecting. I appreciate your sharing them. After he healed up he came to the US for a speaking tour. Has anyone ever come across any articles about this?

Hey Bulldog -

I didn't get anything about him post WWI on the The New York Times - Breaking News, World News & Multimedia website which allows for a search of their archives.

There ia a 5 Nov 1916 article about him downing his 11th German airplane. Worth the quick free read!

One small correction... Frank Luke did not use that map for aerial navigation. He had a different set of maps in his SPAD for navigation. The map shown on this page and the one recently acquired by MK2 was purchased by Luke in March of 1918 in Paris. He used it to track his adventures in France several months before he saw any front line action. It shows the rail lines that he took from one training point to another, and recognizes a few notable incidents that occurred during his time ferrying planes and training prior to his arrival at the 27th.

I'm glad it ended up in your hands, MK2! Congratulations. Please call me and fill me in on all the details. I just spoke with Kevin F. (of the Luke family) a few weeks ago... he called me to discuss the map sale again. This must have been just days before you acquired it.

Thanks for posting it here. All that is now known on this wonderful relic is included in the first chapter of THE STAND: The Final Flight of Lt. Frank Luke, Jr.

Also, it would be great to have you out to one of my speaking engagements/book signings for THE STAND. If you can make one, please bring the map as I'm sure many people would marvel at it. We're in Chicago on July 11th at the Cross and Cockade meeting (BTW, that's also a general invitation to everyone here!).

More dates are still being booked (including a new date at the Luke Air Force Base that's just been confirmed) but the rest of the book tour is listed here: THE STAND: The Final Flight of Lt. Frank Luke, Jr..

Best,
Stephen
