THANK YOU GUYS!! I had pulled down my dictionary and tried to find something that would match up but no such luck.

There are more excellent sites to come (somewhat) at grips with the difficult Sütterlin and Frakturschrift [Black Letter] used in original German and Austro-hungarian documents.

Alte deutsche Schriften

also in English language version!

Deutsche Schreibschrift Klaus Düring

you can even install the Sütterlin fonts on a Windows PC - unfortunately I have not seen it for a Mac till now

There was an online course in Sütterlin made available by one of the Universities in Germany, but I could not find it again.

Cheers

Kees

I have several of different styles, but I find this attached chart the most helpful when translating deutsche Handschrift written by airmen.

Steve - it's the Kite Balloon's tail, I believe, here is a zoom of that lower portion and also of the crew members down below.

Baloon/Sutterlin script

IF you want help with Sutterlin, ask Royalla. She knows EVERYTHING in regards to translating chicken scratching. Jenny

I just spent some time trying to improve this beauty of a faded picture. To let ik look more 'historic' I choosen a sepia tint

Kees - I have been playing with the contrast on some of these - especially the very faded one like this - but not in SEPIA. Wow, beautiful.

Thanks for sharing your efforts on that.

Thanks Jenny - have not had the privilege to make her acquaintance. So will have to say hello. Appreciate the lead!

Another great fessel

Hey folks - sorry for the silence - been swamped with travel and things at the office. Plus, I just haven't won all that many of these images of late. Was really excited about this one - until it arrived in a crumpled envelope. Seems the US postage processing machine crumpled the envelope. Some damage to the image - but it pressed ok - and scanned well. This one appears to be painted black or in a black uniform material unlike others I have acquired. Really like the picture of the whole unit. Will start working on the translation when I get a pause.
