Hi bill1,

I've looked at 3 other allegedly authentic Frankl signatures. They are a close match but they do not resemble the one offered on eBay. Not even close, so my conclusion is that it was not signed by him.

Regards,

Lance

Caveat emptor

One must be very careful with these things, even if the signature actually matches the original. I have seen many bogus signed photos and documents coming up for sale. I usually stay away from all these things unless I am 100% sure of its provenance and authenticity. It is absolutely indispensable to physically inspect the item. You can manipulate an image with Photoshop anyway you want.

Signed Frankl Sanke

For eBay offerings I think it's important to check the dealer's rating and how many items he's sold without complaint. The whole issue of authentic signatures is very difficult since few letters or other authenticated documents exist for comparison. Without such verification four similar fakes can ruin one authentic signature which then looks odd by comparison. It'll always be somewhat of a problem.

Hi again,

For my collection, I've kept scans of (or own) authentic documents to compare signatures against. But that's not always possible. Also, I've seen reputable dealers truly believe in the provenance of their item but still be wrong. I recently had to tell one (VERY well-known) that a Manfred von Richthofen signed card they were auctioning for $10,000+ was a fake. The signature was fairly accurate, but it was on one of Manfred's memorial cards (i.e., issued after his death). Like me, they didn't believe in signatures beyond the grave and removed it from their auction. I felt bad, but would have felt worse if someone had bought it.

Regards,

Lance

MVR Zombie Sanke

Lance,

I do not know if it is the same card as there could be many more, but a poor fellow paid over $3,700 for this MvR zombie card sold at ebay.

Look at post #11 at Richthofen Zombie Card

People never learn......

What a great thread! I like the term "Zombie Card" too. No, I was talking about another card being sold by an auction house other than eBay. Same idea though. It's the fourth one I've seen like this. I've also seen a whole slew of fake autographs -- some really bad -- but others fairly good. My favorite was written with a ball-point pen (you could still see the indentation in the card). The woods is full of 'em....buyer beware!!
