Origin of a flying helmet

Is anybody able to recognize origin of this flying helmet. It should be either French or Austro-Hungarian.
Cheers,
Boris

Roold

Hi Boris,

I am not an expert on early flying helmets, but this flying helmet looks to me like a Roold flying helmet, or at least if it is not a Roold, it is something very similar. The Roold was French. As you alluded to, it could be an Austro-Hungarian equivalent. Sorry I can't be much help but it looks like a Roold to me.

Cheers,

David.

What are the markings in it?

Not all helmets were used for flying. Many were used by motorcyclists and car drivers.

I am not an expert on helmets, but I don't think it is a Roold. At least in the photos available to me, all those labeled as Roold had the leather padding not only on the brow as shown here, but going all the way around the helmet. I also don't see any Roold's illustrated with that snapped pocket on the earflap. I stand ready to be corrected, but it looks more like German/Austro-Hungarian to me.

As an aside, is that actually a snap-pocket on the earflap? It looks like a snap fastener to me-- when were those developed? Doc

Aviators from a couple of countries wore helmets like this before the war and during. Unless it has a specific marking indicating place of origin it could have been France, Germany or any of the others.

Thanks a lot for your help chaps,

there isn't any marking or label anywhere on it, so at least for time being the origin will remain a mystery.
