Info on Aero Squadrons

Greetings!

I found an interesting belt and canteen set last week at a flea market. It's an early M1912 Mills eagle snap pistol belt stamped on the inside, "40th AERO" 113. and stamped on the exterior, "94 AERO". The attached canteen was in an early unmarked olive drab eagle snap cover. The canteen is a early no-seam type stamped "225 A SQN D" on the bottom. The bottom also has the name "Sanford Shapiro" and dates "1925 - 1928" stratched on. There is also an arrow stratched into the back. No cup.
The 94th AS was easy. I've attempted to research the 40th and 225th but no references. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Does any rosters exist to help place the name? Was there any connections between the three squadrons that may link the belt grouping? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Info on Aero Squadrons

One good source for info on the U.S.AERO Sqns. is the Gorrell Report:

E: Squadron Histories, 1-20 - Footnote

It usually gives rosters and other info on the formation and history of the various units.
I note that Gorrell doesn't have the 40th and 225th listed, maybe they were formed post-war??

Info on Aero Squadrons

Cliff,
Thank you for the info on the Gorrell Report. It was outstanding! I searched it and didcovered that the 225th was stationed in Gullane, Scotland from Feb. '18 to Jan. '19. The 40th was not part of the AEF and was still stateside. I still haven't finished with the report yet. Great source and interesting to read.
Thanks
John
