I just finished reading the article in April 2004 issue of Fine Scale Modeler titled "War trophy Fokker D.VII". The article is by Tony Schnurr. It is about building the Dragon kit in 1/48 scale. He built von Hantlemann's Jasta 15 plane marked with the white skull. Quite a good job, he scratchhbuilt the early cowl and exhaust pipes. Also it was his first model built in 10 years, quite a decent return to the hobby. He shows the finished model next to his collection of relics - a German leather flying helmet, goggles, shoulder boards and a Prussian Pilot's badge.
Worth checking out!

Always nice to see an article on a WWI aircraft. A list of new kit releases is also in this issue. Special Hobby is planning a Pfalz DXII early and late version. Late version releasing in Feb.

davecww1:
In the illustration of the 160Ps Mercedes.D.III, (air pump at the rear), The 170Ps D.IIIa had the skinny air pump in front of the first cylinder. The intake manifolds are NOT brown, they are baked black enamel. Ltn. Wüsthoff had borrowed Ltn. Georg von Hantelmann's Fok.D.VII 382/18, this machine was accepted on 16 May 1918 and had a 200 Mercedes D.IIIaüv.

Much is made of the relative desireability of the BMW-engined D.VII. Yet, the high-compression Mercedes mills have also been said to equal their Bavarian counterparts.

Which is true?

That is not quite true. The 200Ps Mercedes had a maximum power of 204Ps, while the BMWIIIa had a maximum power of 265Ps. The BMWIIIa was really the better engine.

A gentleman on the WWI modeling mail list saw the box art of the 1/48th Pfalz XII this past weekend at a modeling contest in Prague. Some of the parts were there as well and his comments were encouraging. He also said the kit is listed in their catalog. Maybe we are getting one summer.

Holy Padded Ballot Box.

Did you see their Wish List Top Ten?

Not one Stringbag on the list.

As Roger Miller would say: Dang me.
