Hi.
Would the undersurface color for Richthofen's second Fokker Dr. I (# 152/17 - the half red, half green triplane) be blue or natural linen color? Any information for a beginner on undersurface color would be most appreciated.
Thanks and best regards
Steve K.

This is a can of worms with no 100% bomb-proof answer, regardless of degree of harumph.

One Vote: "fokker turquoise"
t'other: "CDL"

You decide.

I pick Fokker.

Gets better: dixgussion regards white or CDL field on the crosses, underneath.

"ain't we got fun"

Everyone swears by their own procedure.
Now you can derive yours.

In black & white.

My choice would also be light turqoise underneath fuselage and wings - as a matter of fact, thats the way that I finished mine!

SteveK:
MvR's Fok.DR.I152/17 was finished in this scheme;
Red, upper surface of the upper wing, all struts, fuselage sides and top decking from the forward sides of the cross aft, rudder and tailplane both sides and engine hood. Upper wing, fuselage and rudder crosses fields over painted red leaving a 50mm white border srrounding the matt black iron crosses.
Olive brown, the sides and top decking forward of the cross, upper surface of the middle and lower wing and the top surface of the axle wing.
turquoise,(sky blue +varnish), Under surface of all wings, axle wing bottom of the fuselage forward of the fuselage crosses and up the sides of the bottom longeron 20mm from the end of the red empennage to the rear edge of the engine hood. Lower wingcross fields over painted turquoise leaving a clear doped 50 mm border surrounding the matt black iron cross.
There are some who contend the red extends from the leading edge of the stabilizer to the rear edge of the cockpit on the rear turtle deck. I don't think this correct, there is a clear photograph in "von Richthofen's Flying Circus", by Greg Van Wyngarden, on page 56, photo 149 that clearly and distinctly shows the terminus of the red on the turtle-deck, coincides with the forward edge of of the red on the sides of the fuselage at the forward edge of the white border of the iron crosses.
This is another aircraft that has many opinions, study the photo and arrive at your own conclusion.
Blue skies,
Dan-San
