The Fokker Dr.1 web site (www.fokkerdr1.com) has an interesting photo of a triplane serial number 220/17 that I would like to do. It is noted as being at the Guesnain aerodrome in 1918 and there are actually two Dr.1's shown with the note "blue-nosed" a/c of Jasta 36.

My questions are:

1. Is the blue-nose just the cowling of does it extend further aft? I can't make it out in the photo.

2. Can anyone recommend a blue for Jasta 36?

Otherwise 220/17 looks like a standard Dr.1 finish with the addition of the national marking on the upper surface of the tailplane. I need a touch of blue on my shelf.

Thanks

Rick in Virginia

Thanks for the help guys. Looking through Dan-San's catalog I see a couple of Jasta 36 birds. Looks like I'll have to send him a check.

The markings for Jasta 36 fokker Triplanes in the summer (July)of 1918 was:
Jastaführer Harry von Bülow-bothkamp: white engine hood, all struts and wheel covers. The last two rib bays on all three wings. Dark blue fuselage, and leading of all three wings between the white tips. Tailplane divide dark blue and white and elevators dak blue. The remaining wing areas are in streaked camougflage sky blue>turquoise undersides. Rudder is white with the black latin crosses edge to edge.
Jasta 36 markings:
The Jasta 36 markings were the dark blue fuselage and engine cowl, wheel covers, all struts and the tailplane divided equally dark blue and white with white elevators, the 8:1 Latin wing cross (top and bottom) were painted over and moved to the extreme wing tip, the horizontal arm terminating at the wing tip edge. One had dark blue and white \ stripes at about 45° on the ailerons as a personal marking.
Blue skies,
Dan-San

Greetings all Dan San Abbott is absolutely right for July-Sept 1918. When Jata 36 first acquired their Fok. Dr.I aircraft in early 1918, they simply employed lt. blue cowlings. A ninth Iron cross was applied to the horizontal surface of the elevator stabilizer. Personal markings were seen in the forms of typical banding around the fuselage between the fuselage cross and the cockpit.

Here's the later version.

rfindley;

For the Dark Blue, here are a couple of matches - Humbrol # 109 W.W. 1 Blue or Testors MM # 1772 Angel Blue.
