Won a "Lindburgh soft pack" 1/48 Jenny on Ebay. I figured for $7.99 I was getting a bargain, even if it isn't that nice. Anyone know anything about this one?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...item=5902419970

Any tips specific to this model? I want to build it as a trainer as used to train pilots prior to being sent to units overseas... specifically if I can find out what the guys in the 27th were trained in.

I'm now looking REALLY hard at possibly building the "Early Bird" 2/3 scale Jenny to play around in- the model is "research" for that.

I have a couple on my stash. IMO it's a nice kit which should make either a close to OOB model (and you can't say that about many kits its age) or a good super-detail project. I have the old Wylam (Nieto?) plans should the second option take my fancy. Someone does a Canuck decal set, but I can't remember who.

St Harry says this about it in "Scale Model Aircraft in Plastic Card":

"Curtiss JN-4D; moulded with an odd curved dihedral of upper wing which must be corrected Apart from this and the unsightly troughs for receiving strut units, this model is well formed and has a good degree of detail "

I built it as a Kelly Field kite for the Base Historian while I was stationed there. The most difficult part was rigging the wings, because they're molded solid. As a result, they flexed a lot, making the rigging in one place sag as soon as I got it tight in another. You'll quickly see why it was said that the Jenny had a "built-in headwind."

Rigging: How about very fine wire, and do the ends like a "hangsmans noose" and solder it to represent turnbuckles? (Yes, I know it would have to be done OFF the model, then attached&#33

I'm not going to super-detail it. I don't have the skills, nor do I have the patience of some of you folks. (Well, I say that now, but we'll see how obsessive I get.)

Given the weight of the solid upper wing, single-hole struts would be asking for trouble. Remember the Aurora DH-10? I was an adult before I could get that one to stay.

From memory, it was a nice little kit, and it would be nice to build it with the cowling off to show off the engine.

How would one straighten the "odd curved dihedral" of the kit? Hot water?

She a grand little ship. Just don't forget to re-do the radiator face as it has several ejector pin depressions. When rigging go straight through the wing. I did mine as an ex-hospital transport sold to a private firm for Hollywood film work.

Here's some background info.

Hi Brad,
Sure do, I just finished the Lindberg Jenny a couple of months ago. you will find some info and pix of my finished model in this thread:

http://www.theaerodrome.com/forum/in...howtopic=14670

Not a bad kit. Great price! I would have to say that the biggest pain was of course the rigging. Not that any of it was that hard, just that there was so much of it. A nice "old kit". I needed a 48th scale Jenny as part of my collection of Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome models. It was the only game in town for me and for my meager skills a nice build. A local shop by me has the Lindberg Stearman for around 10 bucks sitting around. Might have to pick that one up also.

Keep us posted on your progress.

Salute,
Steve
