I've been working on some d7s, but i'm not sure which color rib tapes to use; blue, pink, orl ozenge strips. Is there any set color pattern for 4 or 5 color lozenge. Is there any pattern to the different manufacturers, (ie fokker, albatros, oaw) or did the tapes vary by plane. Is my best bet trying to find a photo and try my best to guess the colors?
Thanks
Derek

vonPolheim:
Here's the straight skinny on the Fok.D.VII:
Fokker built, cut strips of the upper pattern fabric on the tops of the wings and stabilizer, The ribs on the ailerons, elevators and rudder were not taped.
The dark tape was used for all peripheral edge tapeing. The ribs on the under sides of the wings and stabilizer were taped with cut strips of the lower light pattern.
Albatros: Salmon pink tapes.
OAW light blue tapes.
Most manufacturers used cut strips of the matching fabric. As far as I know no other manufacturer used blue or the salmon pink tapes. This is the hogwash put out by the the "unknowing". Some used natural woven linen tape, LFG Rol.D.VIa for example. However on the Rol.D.VIb, LFG use cut strips of matching fabrics as like Fokker.
Blue skies,

So who can say what was used for sure? i think those, who were standing at the production line...
Is there a guide to "lozenging" and "ribbing" somewhere?
by the way... how is the word lozenge pronounced correctly? is it french, german or english tounge spoken... and how was it called in germany at that time?
greetings

I have a wing from a german two seater (not fokker) where the rib tape was colored with paint in the color of the individual lozenge.

The Lafayette Foundation has a lower wing underside panel of fabric with lozenge rib cap strips.

This site is the first place that I have heard of "rib tape". Was it universal to all fabric covered planes or only found on certain models?

All aircraft had rib tapes sewn to and then doped on the rib positions. Usually it was similar to the wing covering. In the cases we are discussing here they are different in color or types due to the methods of the three manufacturers. These were the parent comany of Fokker Schwerin / Gorries and the other two, Albatros and (OAW) were license building the Fokker D.VII type.
