Howdy everyone,
I am working on the Roy Brown Sopwith FI. I wanted to share my little jig design. It’s my first version. I’m sure it looks a little like something you’ve seen before, but if not, please read on.

At the very beginning of the model I worry and dread placing the upper wing. I had even gotten to a point where I would stall the project when I started getting near the placing of the upper wing. I have racked my brain to make something that would make it easier.

Here is the prototype.
So what you see here is a piece of clear plastic cut out just the width of the holes in the upper wing. This way I have plenty of room to work It is only wide enough to get all the holes in there. Before I even start the model I first make the jig. I lay the plastic on top of the wing and make my precise holes. I drill them out completely.. I make sure the mock wing is true and square, this will aid in centering. I then take the see through wing and attach it to a nice solid straight piece of wood. You can see all the tape and stuff holding it together. I highlighted the holes this time, I won’t do that again. It made it hard to see!Highslide JS

I like how I can rotate the wing jig out of the way without losing my position. I could turn out to be quite a tool if I work on it more.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to do this better? I know it would help the new bes

EduardFreak,
WOW ! Now that's some clear thinking. If you don't mind I'll cobble up one of my own and then I'll be better placed to discuss refinements. Right off I'd suggest using carriage bolts and wing nuts in place of the rubber bands but I recognise that this is a prototype.
This is one giant step for WW I modellers.
Well Done!

Eduard Freak,

I will be using your clear top design on my jig from know on. Just need to make some mods to accommodate the new design. Please take a look at my first and only design.

Great ideas.....

But, I guess I am lazy (I am ) , I just use slow drying glue and use the upper wing to position the struts. I have been doing that for 50 yrs with little problem.

Great to hear it's helping someone.

If I get it right, it's like plugging the upper wing in.

Thanks

Me too to a certain extent! I HAVE had Trouble with Photo Etched and Metal Struts! I like the slow drying forgiveness of PLASTIC! On the other hand, Lance Kreig? Has had a jig plan posted on the WW1 website for sometime! All of these look great but I would need Drawings to Scale in order to copy!
