Rusty nails !

Someone asked me the other day how I make rusty nails.
This is the sequence going from right to left.
Decide on the pattern and make holes in the wood with a needle.
Twist in tip of graphite pencil.
With a small round brush put a drop of watery burnt sienna into each hole.
Soften the effect using burnt sienna chalk pastel.
This is the area just above the coal chute.
Note:this method works best on raw unsealed wood to obtain that barn siding look.

John, your diorama is absolutely superb! I'm looking forward to following along as you complete it. Thanks for sharing your progress.

This type of weathering is definitely not for the faint of heart .The 3 walls of this small building took me about 8 hrs to do and it still needs a few finishing touches when it is installed in the diorama.

Why so many rusty nails?

My reasoning here is that paint was probably too expensive in those days to use over old wood. The white is a sort of whitewash which is water based I believe. The rust therefore would start to bleed through almost immediately .The green trim would probably be painted on and therefore not as rusty looking.Hope this makes sense!
