Dr-1 factory camoflage

Anybody have a good method for creating the "streaked" green factory paint on a 1/48 Dr-1? thanks

Dr-1 camo

I understand that the base coat for the entire airplane was a metallic sky blue, or aluminum paint colored with a light blue pigment. Then the olive green streaking was applied to the upper surfaces with a wide brush. One color of olive, varying in weight (and thus shade) as the brush deposited its paint.

Prod Fok Tripes:
Topsides: streaked olive (Fokker) green over clear doped linen (beige)
Underside: solid light blue (turquoise) with slight edging on fus. sides and horiztonal stab.
Cabane Struts: solid olive
"I" Struts: Solid light blue (turquoise)
Cowling: solid olive from factory - usually overpainted in the field by unit colors

At least this is how I understood the markings - I am sure someone will correct me if wrong

Hey Tripehound

Petrov27 has nailed it pretty good and if you check the link to Schultz I think you will like his results. Most people seem to pick a nice beige and use a modified dry brush approach with their favorite "Fokker Green" PollyScale makes one, others like Pullman Green in the RR line. There are several home-brews for the turquoise and Misterkit makes one. You can see the edging Petrov27 talks about in clear photos. The "silver-blue" is usually in reference to Voss who flew a prototype....another story and don't ask about the color of his cowling.

BTW, I from the Mobile area

We believe that the torquoise / lt. blue was normal coloured dope no metalicflakes like the silbergraü. The first four pre- production airframes (100/17 - 103/17) were believed to be lt. blue over all with the olive green streaked over the lt. blue on upper surfaces only. While most of the production triplanes employed the streaking over the same areas but all upper surfaces were ntural varnished linen with the streaking over it. Under surfaces were the same or similar lt. blue.

One machine from Jasta 14 late in the production line was captured and the description of it by the British has led us to believe that it my have been painted like the first three but most agree that it was a case of the author simple not presenting the text clearly enough. He knew what he wanted to say but we partially missed his point. The search engine here give us this when you type in "streaking"

Also here are some of my Dr.I kits hope this helps. Ignore the "awesome" stuff the webmaster is a friend and as such likes to poke me in the ribs.

My Gallery
FOK.F.I or DR.I is not sky blue all over!

Tripehound:
See my posting in the AIRCRAFT SECTION. The only reference to the sky all over is Capt. McCudden, all other observations green!
Blue skies,
Dan-San

Tripehound, Having attempted this many times with varying degrees of success/frustration, I highly recommend an enamel "doped linen" (whichever shade of tan pleases you) followed by streaking using any of a number of craft (Delta Ceramcoat, Folkart, etc.) acrylics mixed with Liquitex #126711 Slo-Dri Fluid Retarder. The craft acrylics come in a rainbow of shades, are dirt-cheap (compared to most "model" paints), are available at places like Michael's/ Hobby Lobby, and if you don't like the effect, wash-off with soap/water for another try. Hth, Rob
