Profile control line SE5A

The angular lines of the SE5A lend themselves well to the profile control line model shown in the links below. I don't have any information on the model itself. The "brodak" in the URL's suggests construction from a Brodak kit or plans; if so, it's a model no longer listed in their website catalog.

The top image shows the classic CL practice of putting as much mass as possible (e.g., the cylinder side of the engine and the fuel tank) on the outer half of the model in order to maintain tension in the lines. Other tricks include putting a weight on the outer wingtip, thrust offset, fin offset, and (rarely) making the inner wing(s) slightly larger to generate more lift.

The kit for this plane was offered on Ebay a couple of weeks ago, but disappeared before I could note the details.

A similar Fokker D.VII, assembled and all red, was offered on Ebay earlier today, but is now gone as well. I've heard that a similar Spad XIII was once marketed, too.

Many years ago Sterling had a control line SE5 kit for .15 engines. IIRC it had symetrical airfoils and was intended as a stunt plane.

It's a shame that control line has died out.

You start flying with a full bag of luck and an empty bag for experience. The object is to fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck.
