Question What paint do you use to replicate scale Aluminum Dope

What paint do you use to replicate scale Aluminum Dope?
A grey like Silbergrau or maybe an Alcad type of paint?

Pactra Aluminium.
Good enough, but, I must admit, a bit on the shining and metallic end of spectrum.
Maybe some addition of a grey will help.

Your favourite aluminium with white or grey added will do the trick. If brush painting, keep it sloppy and use a flat.

Hey Peter,

the Humbrol alluminium paints now seem to carry dire warnings about not being compatible with any other oil or acrylic based paints (presumably including their own oil based stuff). Have you got a recommended product that you know works?

Hi Ross,

Usually, I use a mix of one part of silver and one part of white (or light gray) Vallejo paints. You can use too the silver-grey of these brand, but I find it a little to whitish and more on the grey range than the silver range. You can use too their flat silver in case you want a more silvery finish;

HTH

Best regards from Belgium.

Philippe

Hi Ross;

I use Floquil Old Silver (See the Anson) - not a bad silver doped finish but does take a while (like days) to dry hard).

Silver doped finishes are different to silbergrau finishes.

All the Best

Neil

I just tried this with Citadel acrylics ('Warhammer paints'): 1 part of Mithril Silver, 1 part of Fortress Grey, 2 parts of Skull White. Looks better in daylight, but we do not have that stuff enough for photographing this time of the year in Finland!

Yours Mikko

I just paint the part with silver.....let it dry for a week then brush on Testor clear flat. If you don't wait the flat will remove the silver.

Aluminium dope

Hello Ross,

as the other members already pointed out, mix you favorite aluminim paint with either white or light grey (in my case Tamiya acrylics XF 16 + few drops XF 19).
To further cut the brilliance, you can add a drop of Tamiya Buff (XF 57). I usually also work with blue (XF 18), to obtain variations between the "aluminium-doped-planes"...

Best regards
Roman

aluminum dope

I mix "aluminum" with 25-30% neutral gray/light gray. No white.
