Seat belts.
Topgun56:
Early in the war the aicraft were equipped seat belts of some form. I think that four way seat belt/shoulder harness became standard by late 1916 on both sides. The French had a very good with a quick release. The British Sutton harness were four straps, one had a locking cone with an eye for the locking pin. Three of the straps would be placed over cone. and the pin would be inserted locking all the straps on the cone. The adjustment was the three straps had a series of grommets spaced about 2 inches apart.
Germany had the same locking setup which were steel plate tabs, one had the same type of locking cone and pin. THese four plates were riveted to the ends of the four, 50 mm wide hemp webbing straps. The other three had a hole near the end of the tab. The cone belt was the generally the left seat belt, the other three tabs were placed on the cone and secured with the locking pin. On both the British Sutton Harness and the German harnesses, when the pin was pulled all the straps were free and the pilot could get out of the cockpit. The Sutton Harness was used in WW2.
Blue skies,
