Eduard Sopwith Camel Progress Pics

Hi all,
Just thought I’d post some pics of my latest project. After the trauma of tackling the Hi-Tech Roland D.II as my first serious WW1 project, I thought I would go for something a bit nicer to build - the 1/48 scale Eduard Sopwith F.1 Camel in it’s Profipack form.

All I have done so far are the internals (cockpit and engine). Everything is completely out of box and I plan to build the whole thing OOB without any other additions aside from rigging. The Profipack edition of this kit has a lovely representation of the Clerget rotary engine, some nice pre-painted etched seat belts, decals for the instrument faces and a lovely etched metal and plastic seat (which was a pain to put together as it is under a cm wide). Here are some pics. As always, all comments and criticism welcome!

That is all excellent work Brad, you have an outstanding eye for colour. This is some of the best work I've seen here.

Are you aware of the WWI Modelling Web Page?

I'm sure you'd be most welcome.

Thumbs up

Great stuff Brad. It always makes the hairs on the back of my neck tickle when I see the gubbins inside a Camel. That tiny wickerwork perch right up against a bloody great petrol tank!

Hello Brad;
While I think you did do a nice job and its really not reasonable to second guess a fellow modeler may I tell you what I might have added? The kit seat is a beauty but as you found it has an annoying little gap where the tab connecting the back and seat plate fold up together. The seat cushion and the combing around the back & arm rest should be black leather (although I am guessing red or milk choclate brown might be possible as well.) We have one here at the Lafayette Foundation in Denver From Sopwith F.1 D6429 "Camel." Adding putty to resemble the seat cushion will cover that gap without having to separate the back and the seat plate. Seams area bit fiddly on small parts and the best method I found is scrapping them with a sharp razor knife (#11) blade (the mold seams that is) while their still on the sprue.

Your wood work has a nice base colour to it. Have you ever tried the method of dry brushing? I like to add the impression of wood grain with dry brushing very small amount of lighter and or darker versions of the base coat. This is just my opinion but it makes wood items more interesting and livens up my work. Unless a wood surface has been shellac-ed you should be able to see some wood grain or veining.

Your work is very clean and the colour separtations sharp. They only thing I wish Eduard would have added to their Profipacks are bezels for the intsrument faces on the forward panel. Also a small trick I use is to keep much of the interior a flat or semi gloss colour in this scale. Full on gloss tends to push the viewer's attention away from the item it covers. The average viewer's eye will seek out what it can easily detail with and ignor what relects light. These are just my opinons and I hope you can find some nuggets to help you get where you want to go.

Tell us more about your build. What markings have you chosen and have you seen the online build here at the "Drome?"

Thumbs up It may not have a big G but will have to do.

stunning.

thanks for sharing.

Stephen's points are good ones, too.

"Why is the coach yelling at me all the time?"

"when he stops yelling is when you gotta worry."

ditto the markings - what will it be?

Well, here goes, first post on this forum.

Very impressive work so far, Brad. Nice detail, especially of the seat. I like your treatment of the wood surfaces also. These Eduard kits sure are nice!

Regards,

Will
