Strut shock

Yikes, those cabane struts! I had forgotten that they sit proud of the fuselage like that. And why does the bottom of the aft leg of the A-angle cabenes get so thick like that?

If it weren't for my self-imposed anti-AMS, strictly OOB marching orders on this model, I'd be fairing these puppies into the fuselage. It wouldn't take much ...

That doesn't stop me from dirtying up the obvious areas with washes and drybrushing, however.

Next step, plugging in the root ends of the rigging and tidying up. Then attach the upper wing. Should all be done before "Star Wars" opens.

Burl- That really qualifies as green paint. Kermit would be proud. Hawaiian color?

Rigged contest

Top wing on. Requires care and multiple rubber bands and do it slowly. The bottom wing has a little reverse dihedral, So I anchored the middle cabene struts first, let them solidfy, then the outer wings.

Whole model gets the FIRST coat of clear flat -- the many touch-ups later guarantee a second coat. A very faint RubnBuff wipe down of the metal panel -- be subtle! -- and the guns.

Then the rigging starts, the scarily intensive rigging that characterizes SPADs. I'm using the kit's predrilled holes, even they're not in exactly the right places.

Looking like a SPAD. Has anyone guessed whose plane I'm building? It's not the kit markings ....

Hint

Green fuselage, linen wings, red and linen-colored insignia, British national markings ...

Ready to hang from the ceiling

And GreenKnight figured it out. It's G-8's airplane, courtesy roundels robbed from the Camel kit and letters cut out of Frisket paper.

Looking at the pulp covers, it seemed more often than not the fuselage was green -- not THIS green except on a half-dozen covers — with CDL wings and control surfaces. The G-8 was red on the wings, while on the fuselage it was CDL colored.

Still missing the gunsight. The prop on SPADs seems to be pretty much a uniform color, so this one is drybrushed with various shades of borwn to look sort of wooden.

Even though this was supposed to be a quickie, no-sweat build, I couldn't resist muddying the wheels, creating oil and smoke stains, chipping the paint, etc. I wanted to do it in a weekend, but it was more like a couple of weeks, which is still lightning speed for me. It will hang from the ceiling over my desk at work.

Now, I've got a plan for that 1/28 Fokker D-VII with the horrible upper wing I thought was unbuildable....
