painting CDL

I'm not only looking for color suggestions, but techniques also. I don't have much of a selecton at my LHS. Limited pretty much to Testors Model Master enamels acrilics, although Hobby Lobby has a pretty extensive line of artists acrilics. I stay pretty much with the acrilics because but will use whatever works when there is little choice.

I airbrush reasonably well and I'm not afraid to custom mix what I need.

What is the best technique for getting that CDL look. Just finding the right color still leaves it looking flat.

How do it? Washes? Glazes? What's the secret?

Thanks for the input...
Ray

Hi Ray,
I did an early Nieuport 11 that was overall clear doped linen wings. I painted the wings overall white primer, then used a permanent black fine point marker to draw lines for all of the wings. Then a couple of light coats of clear doped linen (polly scale offers this in acrylics) just build up the layers enough to give the ribs a translucent under the fabric type of look. When done you can give it a semi-gloss clear coat.
Hope this helps,
Dave
