Two 1/72 scale pilot figures I painted this weekend...
Hi all,
Here are the two pilot figures I painted this weekend:
.

.
I really tried to get a bit of variation on the clothing by dry brushing a lighter color than the base color on the wrinkles.
I think the faces turned out okay too, but they were tough at this scale.
They're from the Orion Pilots of the First World War set of 1/72 scale figures. More info on that set can be found here:

Hmm. My website seems to be going down from time to time, so I'll attach the photo here.

Looks great! I spent the weekend working on 150 15mm German Fallschirmjaegers for a friend's FoW gaming addiction. One thing you might look at is getting some Games Workshop Flesh Wash. Just a few drops will pick out the eyes and lips without too much work - the old military miniatures thing about squinting eyes would be doubly so with aircrew around spinning propellers, you would probably rarely ever see the whites of the eyes. I have a pack of those figures and was thinking of painting some up, too. I recall seeing something on a plastic toy soldier board about priming them so the paint doesnt flake off, but cant recall what that was. Did you do anything special as a primer coat? I just remember the Airfix Napoleonics troops and all the paint flakes in the box after a move.

Thanks, Tom.
I was wanting to do a wash for the face, but I didn't have anything with which to do it. I'll have to give the Games Workshop stuff a try.
I coated the figures with Future Floor Wax first. That seems to help with the flaking problem. Then I painted the whole figure flat black. I used Testors MM Acryl paints for everything.
When the two figures are in the cockpit of the Glencoe Martin MB-2 I'm building, the one's arm is resting on the shoulder of the other who's hand is in the air. There will be a third figure, an officer, standing in their line of sight in the finished diorama.
At least, that's the plan for now. It may make more sense to use the fellow who's about to spin the prop instead.
Regards,

Sorry to bump an 'old' topic, but I've been using GWS Citadel Colours for years. Their washes and inks are perfect for giving details a bit more depth.
This is a picture from the 1/72th scale crew of the Heller Roland C-II I've built
recently.
They're not finished in this shot but you can see the effects of the washes
The coats were darkened using GWS Brown Wash. I put a second coat over it to darken creases and folds somewhat now.
The faces were done with Flesh Wash over their 'Bronzed Flesh' paint and then I picked out the raised areas with 'Bronzed Flesh' again. I think I overdid the Fleshwash a bit (should've thinned it down some more)
I was looking for some Black Wash recently, but I couldn't find them in their new collection any more. I fear that they do still carry Inks, but no Washes.
Oh, GWS Ink dissolves in Micro-Sol. Be careful when applying those Decals
Anyway, their site: www.games-workshop.com

Mr. Flibble,
Thanks for posting the photo. Your figures look great!
The paints you're using look glossier than the ones I'm using, but I'm using matte paint.
I've decided to leave the figures just as I've painted them, but the ground crew and officer figure I have yet to paint will get washes. That'll be my first time using a wash on anything, so it'll be interesting to see how it goes.
Regards,

Thanks,
I think you did a nice job on yours too.
The beauty of inks and washes is that it flows off the raised parts and into the nooks and crannys of the models. You can also use it to darken colours that are too bright. An easy little tool for hiding little mistakes and missed spots Afterwards you can highlight the raised areas again if needed.
When painting details at this scale you'll need every help you can get, heh
Cheers,
Rick

Amen!
The two figures in my post are the 2nd and 3rd figures I've painted. It gets easier each time.
