Roden SE5a

Hi all - I have just finished Roden's SE5a. It is in the livery of a 2 SQN AFC aircraft.
I used Vallejo "Model Air" Olive drab for the PC10 finish. It looks just about right to me.

Carpo, some questions if I may:
What did you use for '10 on the Fee and the Camel?

and

Whudje do for the inspection winders?
Build - or - sim with brush/paint?

Yipes! Love the AFC stuff!

Excellent work as usual Carpo, I don't care what you say, drab as the colour scheme may be it certainly looks fantastic. I love the AFC stuff - I look forward to seeing it at the South Australian Comp this year!!

The big question is when are you going to start that big Camel..... hehehe

Excellent build Carpo! I really like your technique on the prop and rads there. Also, I think that CDL you used on the undersurfaces is spot-on! Thanks for sharing it with us.

SE5a bits and pieces

Hi all - thanks for the feedback.

Barker: - the Fee and the Camel both have my own mixes for the PC10 - various browns and greens from Humbrol. I have been looking for something that I can use straight from the jar/bottle and for the green end of the PC10 range, I can find nothing that pleases my eye more than vellejo's olive drab. It is much browner thatn other olive drab's I have seen.

The pulley inspection windows were painted CDL and then washed with sepia ink, the idea being to get the colour of the CDL inside the wing, but darker to represent shadows. I then painted in a grey pulley and uses a 0.1mm drafting pen for the cables - these need to line up with the entry point for the rigging of the control surface horn. I then painted the area clear gloss. The effect is good enough for me.

Brad: I'll start that camel when I turn 50! It is a long way off yet!

The models are beautiful! Very nicely done. The Samurai is exquisite!!
PC10 is brown, contrary to popular opinion. PC12 is chocolate brown.
PC10 as olive drab is one of those things that have perpetuated itself.
For example, in Les Rogers's massive book, "British Aviation Squadron Markings of World War I", on page 18, Les Rogers states: "This produced a medium to darlk brown." All the illustrations by Bob Pearson the aircraft color dark olive. When the Germans did the study on the captured S.E.5a B'507 from 60 Squadron, they difined the color as brun, brown.
Over time maybe I can get this on track too.
