Thumbs up

Well, I guess it's settled, then.

Since I'm not in that business, I can't. However, as someone who works in legal publishing (and am a lawyer, although it's almost 25 years since I practised), I do know something about intellectual poperty and corporate lawyers.

Rule #1 - Protect your trademark (try opening an "Olympic" anything, or a restaurant with the name McAnything [especially if your sign has red and yellow] and I can practically guarantee that in very short order you will receive a letter from the IOOC or McDonald's threatening you with legal action. And I can give you the citations of dozens of Canadian cases with just those two.)

Totally aghast about this idiocy...but not surprised. It's typical of the liars...er, lawyers...who have too much time on their hands and fabricate some kind of conspiracy of model companies bilking their clients out of millions. B@stards.

Not quite. They're trying to protect their client's property, and perhaps even generate some more revenue for them. That's hardly "bilking" their client. In fact they wouldn't be doing their job if they didn't advise the company of threats (however far-fetched) to its property.

Whether it's a short-sighted policy is another matter. But corporate lawyers aren't there to make policy.

Press response

Actually, the press doesn't act to create news, it reacts to what is already happening and tries to make sense of it. The licensing issue isn't excatly a new issue ...

... but now that the tiny hobby lobby is responding to the giant defense contractors, it has caught the notice of news outlets.

Remember, the definition of "news" is that it's something a reporter didn't know yesterday.

I see where all this is going, but my point is that it is all just too close to the “Chicken Little” story. I have no doubt that the International Modelers Association and others have posted concerns and reactions to the “STORY” but that does not make it true.

I am pleading for someone closely connected to the modeling industry, to post the evidence from the source. Show us where you have been notified.

I called the FORD motor company’s marketing rep and she said what I’m saying. She had heard of no such thing and could not even give me a starting point to see where such a rumor came from.

I tried to contact the author of the news article posted, but there seems to be no way to find him/her. Like all the other “news generators”, a starving journalist was paid to sensationalize a rumor and now he’s got everyone in reaction mode. It happens every day. That’s why they tell you about the HEAT INDEX in the summer and the WIND CHILL FACTOR in the winter, rather than the other way around. Sensationalism!

Back to the point:
Someone in the know, please post the evidence, then we can marshal forces. Until then it’s just another example of how bad our press industry has become.

Wouldn't matter if they did pass a law against the manufacturers. Us scratchbuilders would form underground modeling. You can take away our kits, but you can never quench the spirit of the underground scratchbuilders!!!!! Bwuhahahahaha!

Will this perhaps be a boon to us kitbashers and scratchbuilders? Is it possible I could be the Patrick Henry of a New Revolution?
