Isn't it, though?
Looking forward to seeing the diorama, Stephen. It sounds very ambitious.

Lets discuss that for a moment then. While the collection depots had to have certain amenities what would be common? Nivelle was the home airfield for Jasta Schule II. The deciding factor on the size of the base plate (display base) will depend on;
A. The number of aircraft,
B. The number and size of buildings.
C. The number of vehicles,
D. All of thew above.
Considering the area each bird will take up I tentatively see this layout with a perimeter of 3.5 ft X 2 ft. This will allow me to avoid anything but small field offices and start houses.
Whatever you put down on an open field needs to relate to the story. For instance. I could easily have a German pilot, uh er... ground loop into an allied officer's privy. While funny it tends to repel some viewers especially if you carry it off in detail. Years ago I did a diorama of Ltn. Greim's accident when he ran his Albatros D. III into a field privy. When it was finished the stark reality tended to gross out many viewers. Lesson learned.
In a similar vein using the Part of Poland strip down Fokker fuselage sitting in a burn pattern and appropriately charred, will tell the story of a pilot that accidently dropped his cigarette in the fuselage as he was exiting. The main draw will be the colourful line up and their historic relation to one another. That is aircraft that were actually in the same place at the same time on the same airfield.
The tough part may be the 1/48 British soldiers Sentries and etc. Microsculpt where are you!!!!!??????

Carpo isn't a pom. He is from South Australia. Close to being a pom but yet very far away.

Here are a couple more. The Red Nosed D.VII in this post was seen in the Ginger say it ain't so thread when the images were intact. But now I have added some Roden engine supports. The engine is a Tom's Modelworks 1/48 all metal Mercedes.
