Talking Swedish WWI pilots for modeling.....

Hi folks!

As I'm just getting into this again after a long absence, I'm looking for different inspirations to model from...
Does anyone know of any Swedes flying for the allies in WWI or the central powers? I don't really care if they were aces or not, so that's not important.
As for now I have in 1/48:

Eduard: Albatros D.V and Nieuport 17.
Roden: SE-5 and SE-5a

Waiting for: Eduards Royal Fokker (yummy!)

Oh well, back to tool hunting etc.....

von Rosen was a Swede, wasn't he? I'm referring to the guy who gave Finland their first Morane and also used the blue swastika as his logo...i think it was von Rosen...

He flew with Goering during the war I think.

Don't make a mistake between Eric von Rosen and his son Carl von Rosen.

As far as I know, Eric von Rosen give a Thulin D (a copy of a Morane L) to the Finland. This aircraft became the first aircraft of the Finnish forces. His personal marking was a "Hakaristi" (a blue sun wheel or swastika). This symbol had nothing to do with the excecrated nazi symbol but was a lucky symbol. It was adopted as the Finnish air force marking until the end of the WWI act 2 (or if you prefer WW2). If I remember correctly, Eric von Rosen never flew for the Germans or the Allies.

His son Carl (born in 1909 and a little too young to have flown in WWI was the nephew of Karin Göring (the wife of Hermann Göring) and fascinated by the flying machines, he became a pilot (partly due to the influence of Hermann Göring during its career as a taxi pilot for Svenska Lufttrafik between the wars). During WW2, when the Russians attacked Finland, Carl von Rosen quit is pilot's job in the KLM, flying bombing missions for the Finnish forces. Married with a Dutch women, after the invasion of the Nederlands; he applied for the RAF but was refused on account of his families relations with Hermann Göring.

I hope this is of a little help.

Best regards from Belgium.

Edmond

I'm fully aware that this is the wrong war, but here's an interesting page about Swedish pilots in the RAF during WW2.

Cheers gentlemen! Since I got back into this business recently, I thought that I'd try keep things down by modeling a certain area if you like.....
That's why try to model aircrafts flown by Swedes or those with Swedish heritage like Ira Bong, "Bud" Anderson 357 FG, "Flip" Anderson VP-33 and many others.
I enjoy the challenge since I think that the research is half the fun while you do your building... and you get to know great people as well.
Much appreciated!!

Charles- Interesting. First time I have heard Dick Bong called by his middle name. Is that what his family used?

Thanks for the correction Edmond. I wasn't aware of the father/son difference. I know, of course, about the difference between the Finnish and Latvian pre-WW2 'swastika' not having anything to do with the nazi party.

Before I started building WW1 kits I was crazy about the Finns and their inter-war years. I still hold a special place in my heart for those courageous pilots.

From the Factory on the hill,
John
