Another in Progress - Eduard Pfalz D.IIIa

G'day all,

Here's another one I have in progress at the moment - the Eduard Pfalz D.IIIa in the "Profipack" boxing. I started this kit a while ago, and after recently buying the new Osprey "Pfalz Aces of World War One" (a fantastic book btw!)I decided to pick it up again. I have gone with the minimal moficications approach on this one - ie I have tried to keep most of the kit OOB - my approach was to try and keep this one as a fun build.

Here's the cockpit. Minimal mods only, in this case gun trigger wires and control rigging, the rest is completely OOB. I didn't want to buy into the "what colour is a Pfalz interior?" arguement so I went with the instructions and painted it wood. I also found that the instructions have you place cockpit details way too far forward on the side walls - whilst I had no references to guide me, I moved some pieces around to where I thought they should go (ie where they would be in the reach of the pilot at least!!).

The major construction is also complete save for the attachment of the top wing, as is the pre-shading.

Next is onto painting. What sheme to do....

As always, feedback / criticism / suggestions always welcome.

What do you use for the gun firing cables?

Well folks, after a flurry of activity, she's done.

Aside from the minor modifications to the cockpit (Ross, the gun cables are just fine wire), the only other additions were piping from the radiator and upper wing tank from wire and solder, and bungees on the landing gear from elastic.

I wanted to do something diferent from the usual silver Pfalz's, and the Red/Blue Jasta 15 Pfalz's are a bit common, so after skimming through Greg Van's Pfalz Aces book, I chose to model the Pfalz flown by Ltn Hans Muller of Jasta 18. This red / white scheme is often seen adorning Fokker Dr.1s, D.VIIs and Albatros DV's, but this is the only known Pfalz that carried the unit's striking colours and raven insignia (which I borrowed from an Eagle Strike decal sheet). Rigging is elastic glued to turnbuckles made by "Bob's Buckles" - this was the first time I had tried this method for rigging and I must say these turnbuckles are great! I had this baby rigged in under 45min and I could do all of the painting before the top wing went on.

Although this kit has been out for a while, it is a sweet build, and she goes together quickly and hassle free. I had absolutely no problems construction wise, including no dramas at all with getting the top wing on straight. Anyways, all comments and criticisms welcome!

A great model, Brad! The colour scheme is much nicer than most of the silver Pfalzs - But please tell us more about those fine looking turnbuckes. Where did you get them? Are they photoetched parts?

Brad; Nice build, another prime effort on your part. The turnbuckles look like Bob's Buckles, right? Your building a uniquely marked stable. The Eduard wheels for this kit always bugged me. The smaller dimple is actually supposed to be the location of the Pfalz logo.

Cheers Brad

Brad,
I am so chuffed to see my turnbuckles on such a beautiful build. If you don't mind, could I use some of your pics for my ebay page? They show up so much better than the ones on my Albatross.

For all those who would like to try some of my Buckles (1/72 1/48 scale) please get in touch at bobs.buckles(at)gmail.com (<----done to stop spamming!!)

All Aerodrome members who order direct get 10% off any order placed. Buckles sell for £1 for 10 buckles P&P to the USA is £1.50. Or you can order them at my ebay page. do a search for bobamir

Great work Brad
Makes me want to get stuck in to my DIII combo's!!

Cheers lads.
